The GGW-H10N is expected to be released in May, just at the same time as Sharp Corporation's new laser technology for Blu-ray and HD DVD drives will appear, or better said appeal on/to the market. This new technology uses a 210mW blue-violet laser diode, which should yield recording speeds of up to 6x the speed, compared to 2x or even some models, like the one presented in this article, at 4x.

Nichia achieves 420mW pulsed operation of violet laser
Japan’s Nichia Corp has developed a violet laser diode operating at an out put power of 420mW in pulsed mode, with an estimated lifetime exceeding 10,000 hours and stable operation for 1000 hours at a case temperature of 80°C.

The performance is sufficient for next-generation DVD recorders with a double-layer disc operating at more than 12x record speed, or a quad-layer disc at more than 2x record speed.

Nichia has already been mass producing lasers with pulsed-mode output powers of 130mW since April and 180mW since June. The firm said in May that it planned to mass produce a 250mW model (for 8x speed recording) in January and a 320mW model (for 10x speed recording) in first-half 2008.

Nichia adds that it is aiming to expand its production capacity as well as improve product quality in order to meet demand for the next-generation DVD market.

We have been building with BR's from 6x drives and so far, I have only pushed to 165 mW.  I'm a little afraid to go farther because the diode is too $$$$  :D  Others are being more conservative on power and I don't blame them.   250 mW would be nice and we often run LD's in CW mode up near the published pulse range.

Thanks for the reply Hemlock, I came across these pages late lastnight and read as many as I could find. So from what ive read, id gather that 160-180ma range is probably a safe one? Considering that the heatsink they come in cant be as efficient as a larger one. Does the pulse make that much of a difference?

Also, 420mW for a 12x? That has to be good news for the eventual release of an 18x-20x :)

GooeyGus blew his first 6x by accident at 240mA or so.
I dont think we can draw direct parallels between overdriving reds and blu-ray - both use different materials (AlGaInP vs GaN) and probably different passivation techniques to reach higher COD power levels.
Anyway, we are seeing steady progress in power levels and I wouldnt be surprised if within 2-3 years those BDs are on a par, if not stronger, than current red open cans.

I set up a BR labby with TEC, I think ill put a 6x diode in there and start playing with it. Im curious to see where the limit is. :eek:

My guess is that they can be safely operated at somewhere between 180-200 mw.
It will be good to finally see some figures though. I understand peoples reluctance to test them but this is a hobby on the edge, you have to take some risks sometimes. :)

I went to 160 mA because DrLava sorta challenged me. This is how we push the limits.

I'll set my driver at 150mA tonight and post the results. it will probably take my forever to figure out the resistor combinations though.

Oh yea and I know for sure they will die at 280ish mA. BUT one thing to note is that it did last surprisingly long ;D It had to be about 8 seconds at close to 300mA. Yea, it was bright.

Almost forgot, here is the 803t I killed today. It was doing good at 100mW, and then crapped from duty cycle testing. I was on the 5th minute, and I guess thats what killed it. The heatsink measured 33.7 degres C at the time of death, but still working on finding what current it was at. :mad:

If I had one I would Mike, maybe after I sell a couple of Kryton 803ts. For me the risk is easy to justify. The expense however, is not.
I hope one day I can join you noble pioneers. :)

Well mine is set to 150mA and i'm getting close to 140mW of 405 :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

its gorgeous to say the least.

I had mine running at 178ma and it seems it would have been ok but I ran it for 5mins straight.
I pushed my 6x to 240ma and got the magic flicker! It would seem that with TEC 210ma is doable but im not sure how safe. When I put my hand in front of the beam (focused infinate) it scortched my skin faster than my 300mW green!
