wow, nice finds!

well, 450mw would be at 12x speed, 12x speed over all 4 layers! at the moment they are at 8x singlelayer and 2x doublelayer.. whereever that should point to in this graph..
but hell yea, seems like eventually there will be a watt in a 405nm laser! :)

they announced multiple layers for dvd too, actually. never came more than dual-layer..
but then, if there will be only dual-layer bluray, there will have to be some newer recordingtechnology? real uv? green or blue holography? either way, there will be some laser involved! :)

Those highlighted colors confuse me a little. Is the red and pink representing just higher power? Or diode wavelength? When I first glanced at it I thought, "450mW red and 900mW IR"

The red is "Pulsed" power. The pink just means its questionable.

It's not clear...

But if I were to guess, it seems like all of the numbers are referring to pulsed power. But the pink highlighted numbers are just target numers...

ALL the Blu-Ray laser power numbers are pulsed power for writing BR discs.

The graph in message #60 above is ALL pulsed BR power.

We operate them sucessfully above these pulsed power outputs,

with better heatsinks ...
and hopefully better AR lenses.

..its really time for drlava to bring v5 of everyones favorite driver! :)
cant wait for 12x! not that its long ago that i wanted to get a 10x or 8x!

manuel

I'm thinking about releasing my v5 "IgorT" driver for $18 is that a decent price?

It is 10 times as stable for BluRays and can deliver up to 1.25A, until Lava moves to a better chip....
EDIT: It's 10 times, not 20 times - that was in reference to older versions, incorrect, i must edit..

But 12x's won't need 1.25A, probably 700mA if i know Daguin tho...

That sounds like a pretty good price. Will they come preset for that price? I know you don't like POT's, so would it come with some resistors instead for us to set it?

Igor;

The Japanese bulletin boards stated that Pioneer was using the Sanyo and had the quote.

The reason the Sanyo press release makes sence ...

is the fact that Sanyo LD's were going to skip the 10X level and go straight to 12X.

That appears to be what Pioneer did with their BR writers.

While Buffalo came out with the 10X & LG released the BH10NS30 10x Blu-ray Disc Writer.

Good info, Larry... :)

Thanks! That was preciselly what i wanted to know.

its a boost driver? what are the dimensions?

It's a high efficiency DC/DC converter, i measure efficiencies of 85%+ all the time, when testing them..

Simply said, it's a boost driver, with a stability of <0.3mA (usually never changes in current more than 0.2mA over a Li-Ion so the current is always the same!)..

i'm having them professionally assembled now, but i have to get 1000pcs to keep the cost down...
They'll work great with 12x diodes tho. The driver itself produces little or no heat in v5, which i drew just now...

But this is the wrong thread to ask questions... I'll post detailed pictures of the prototypes this evening, in it's own thread. Interest via PM for now or the thread when i post it.

The size is 9x13mm... It was made to fit a shortened Heatsink/Module, 2/3's of AixiZ needed...

It's what i've been using to make ~130 or so lasers...
It's the only driver ready for 12x diodes when the time comes...

I will post specs in the correct thread...

definitely interested in that driver! for me, the maximum current/voltage and heat at high outputs are the main limitations for drlava's v4. so yes, much interested in your driver, igor!

I can make it fit both a pot or resistors if you have a SPECIFIC current in mind..
The reason i don't like pots is that people think they are made for turning... They call it a pot-mod, but it's a silly thing to attempt without the right equipment.

Otherwise, I'm testing one right now at 700mA and then at 1A...

But this is the 12x thread. Only reason i mention it now is that it's the only driver ready now for 12x from v1 and up....

We won't see 12x's for a while, so i'll get everything ready by then.
The thread will be ready this evening.

So let's not ask questions about the driver here, ok?
I don't want to thread-jack...

That's why i am worried! They say 8x's is a 250mW Pulsed diode! We push it to 400-500mW!!!

We can't safelly go that far if this is true, if the 250mW was it's CW rating on the other hand... That would explain how we get 500mW+ "safelly"..

EDIT: I think i'm gonna kill a $170 diode just to see where it pops...

The 12x from Sanyo is supposed to be a 450mW Pulsed diode. That should do 500mW CW overdriven.

But if the 8x is only 250mW Pulsed, we should not go too far above 300mW... Unless they last 6000h avg at 30°C...

Please click on the thumbnail...
- Note 1: Seems to indicate 250mW Pulsed for 8x diodes. That's 125mW CW!
- Note 2: Seems to indicate a 300mW Pulsed diode for 12x.. If that is not CW power, we should not set it above 400mW! Well Dave can set his to 600mW.. I actually expected this from the so called 150mW Nichia's... 250mW was their Pulsed rating. I thought they might be same as 8x's?!?
- Note 3: Seems to indicate a 450mW Pulsed diode for 12x?!? I don't get it, it's in red..

Now this is what i don't understand:

Sanyo announced 200mW CW / 450mW Pulsed for 12x drives a while ago..
That's what i would HOPE to find in a 12x drive, but what if it's a 300mW Pulsed diode?!? Then a 12x could only be safe to 400mW after AR coated glass..

This is what worries me! Were our expectations too high?!?

EDIT: Something doesn't seem correct here...

The driver can boost to 25V if needed, not that any 405nm diode will need more than 7V max at any future time, unless badly overdriven.

I'm preparing the correct thread now...

As for 12x's:
I believe we should sacrifice an 8x just to see what it's CW rating really is....

Let's figure this thing out once and for all! What do you guys think?

Dave: Can i murder your diode? I would pay for it of course. Or people could donate into an 8x murder fund.. :yh:

You're gonna make me cry. I still do not have even one IgorT build. I've been waiting since the days of the first PHR trade around with Alex! Remember way back at the beginning when you were still trying to get a pen style laser designed in addition to the current host? I was the only one that wanted the pen style. I traded multiple PHR diodes for it? We could not get the pen style to handle the heat. . . . .

<sigh> You can kill it if it will help :'(

I'll get with Glenn to see abut including the second LG diode in your next package.

<slinks off to pout>

Peace,
dave
