MMM I've been playin all day with my 8x and have had so much fun. A 12x with a longer duty cycle would be even better. I'm too nervous I'll fry my laser!

Anyways if sharp came out with a 12x, would their new tech to write more layers add more mw?

in fact we only need someone in japan who buys several drives and extract the sleds. easy work, and there will be some cash extra for that person.. :)

themandalorian, noone can say anything about those drives and diodes for sure. but a second (or more) layer would need more power, since the layer(s) under it will absorb some of the energy. almost any "extra" burning capability (like another layer or rewriteables) will need more power, or will burn slower with the same power. was all the same with dvd burners.
but then, who knows? there are drives (203) which do 8x burning for bith single- and duallayer.. no, I dont understand that!

^ no, we only need PATIENCE.

Isn't better wait a bit, see how the market move, maybe left prices drop, in a month or so, and overall, check them, before hurry and buy ?

Ofcourse it's just a personal feeling, but, think ..... first BR, at their exit, 800 euro, after 6 months, less than half ..... 4X, started at 560 Euro, same trend ..... 6X and 8X, also them, when exit on market, less than the previous one, and prices dropped after few months ..... now, if the prices indicated are correct, 12X are starting on the market at 250$ (180 Euro) ?? ..... how much time before they fall under 100 Euro ? ..... a pair of months ?

And in the meantime, they sell some on the market, peoples uses them (for burn discs, not for make lasers :p), so, we also can see if there's something wrong in this serie ..... i mean, a too high number of units sent back for repair or defects, in short time, can be another indication of something wrong in the diodes, IF there's something wrong with them, where instead, a limited number of units broken or defective in the few months after the release, can be an indication that the units are good quality, imho ..... ofcourse, is not an indication that we can take them and use for pointers, but is still one more data for have a better idea, and all that it require is some patience ;)

You are right HIMNL9, one thing that we should all start looking for now is lower 8X drive prices!

You mean that you aren't already doing this?!?

In any event, as I posted earlier, the price of used drives should plummet after the 12X's hit the states in the next month or so.

By "look for" I implied 'expect', but in any case we should be constantly checking places like newegg, and amazon. Like you said, once they come to the U.S.

$250USD isn't a lot when you think about how much people were paying for 8x drives not to long ago. Anyway do we even have a driver that can properly drive theses 12x LDs?

Probably, but we will not know until someone takes the "hit" for the rest of us.

@ Meatball -- I was kidding ;)

However, the kinds of places you suggested are not the best place to find deals. Look at used equipment lists. Scan the PC "geek" lists. Look through the DIY electronics lists. These places will have people who are dissatisfied with their purchase or have "moved on" and are trying to get a little $ back for their used units.

So far I've picked up two @ $145. I just missed one for $150.

Peace,
dave

^ i suspect not, at least if they are not in the 5,5 / 5,7V FV range ..... if they go over 6V, also flexdrive can be too much out of spec, for drive them in the correct way ..... so, maybe needed linear LDO, or some new boost driver, probably.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dr. Lava's version 5 FlexDrive will have higher current/output voltage capabilities...

Let's hope so!

That's what he said he was going to do after I posted the voltage from my first 203. I haven't heard if he did it or not.

Even if making the flexdrive handle the higher voltage where to make the driver an energy hog, I would still buy it for these newer Diodes.

Hmm, lets hope 8x prices drop soon.
If they do, I might just leave the $$$ 12x and try a 8x first...

There seems to be some confusion in this thread at least from what I am reading. The drives were priced at 21000 to 22000 yen which is about 250 USD. But for now they are only being sold in Japan.

So when they are sold in the US the prices will be a lot higher? This is what happened with the 8x's?
