Hi again, this is the second laser I've built so far, and definitely not my last. I'm digging this hobby now, even if it means my wallet's demise .

Its a PHR-803t diode, classic of classics.
I got three sleds from o-like at $7.99 and now they lowered them at $5.99...temptation :cryyy:

It is powered by Drlava's microflexdrive at 115 mA using a 14500 900 mAh 3.7V Ultrafire protected battery.

Has a qumefox 3 element 405/445 glass lens. Obviously on aixiz housing.

Anyway, you all have seen the epic host popularized by jayrob and co, so what the heck I'll be one more to review it.

lol now, i discovered it is compatible with the aluminum version, so that means i can also use it with 2x AA primaries and 3V.

The pill has the driver fit inside, with very short wires poking through towards the diode. I could not take pictures of the soldering job since i completed this laser before i owned a camera.
The diode is surrounded by the flashlight's own reflector flipped back and used as heatsink, enlarged with a burr to press fit the aixiz housing.

The back end is soldered shut rather crappily, but its not a critical component. You can see a copper dot in the picture, thats the wire poking through the solder. Center is positive.

My camera gets owned by a direct hit.

Now, to the side, it still develops funky aberrations.

Dot roughly one meter away.

I had second thoughts about using a PHR with such a good driver. Perhaps a 6X at 200mA would have been better, but i wanted a "beginner" powered laser to get used to how light behaves. I think its wise to do so before i even attempt a high power build.
I really have no problems with it so far, it has run about two battery cycles with no signs of crapping out. Heatsinking is still nice considering stainless steel is a crappy conductor, and its wrapping the aluminum. It barely gets warm if left for a minute or so on.

Thanks for reading!

see here for cleaning methods

http://laserpointerforums.com/f49/lens-cleaning-66293.html

for me it worked with a very soft crushed bit of toilet paper and some ethyl alcohol... make one or two circular motions on the lens... repeat with another end of the toilet paper (use soft one):D

after 1 or 2 times it's clean ... there are better methods but this worked for me quite well (better than cotton buds) :)

Toilet paper, ill try that. Im afraid i have the sandpaper type :undecided: :( but it should work.
I might have some Ethyl laying around from when i traveled to mexico. Ethylic alcohol is not used here, instead they sell and use Isopropyl for wound cleaning...and i dont know why. It must be because people drank it or something and got owned by the methylic traces in it.

I Like How you used the Stock Aluminum Reflector.:D I did that in the Black Version a Wail Ago.:)

Nice work. I Love these Hosts.:)

haha lol i didn't know that people are taking it as a drink around there :D
we mostly use that here.. don't be hard with the sandpaper toilet paper though, you might scratch the lens... better take some very soft one...
i hope they didn't ban that too :D lol :D:wave:

lol XD
well i tried toilet paper, single swipe with alcohol and another swipe dry, and it seems i have a clean lens now. Thanks for the tip.

OH yes i see now, you did the same on your PHR and red builds. This host seems to be one of the most popular, and i can see why; it houses an aixiz module quite well. I used the reflector cause while i have access to a lathe, its for school projects only :(

EDIT: well i cleaned the diode window and the lens, and it still projects that weird pattern far away. It looks very similar to TEM20.
Any idea of what could be the cause? PHR are single mode o.o

How did you get the pill and the reflector out of the flashlight head?

I used one of those pointy plastic combs lol, but i guess anything pointy or so can work. Just catch one of the solder blobs from the side and spin it.
