I've been driving mine at 105ma for a few days now with no problems. I don't leave it on for more than a minute or two though. No heatsink other than the Aixis housing.

4.2 k for 500 drives = 8.40 each! :p

Odds are they have either phr or or 8011 heads with blue diodes. as i found out you can remove the blue diode in about 45 seconds and still have a perfectly usable normal cd & dvd drive. The good part is that it's BEST offer! The only issue i see is importing them in the states, but daaaaaaammmmm!

 THAT'S A CRAZY DEAL!

Anyway i asked the fellow a few questions to determine the health and offer ballpark. If i get the right answers to the questions i'll probably end up buying a lot of 'em I'll be buying roughly 250 of them for a business venture- for sure i'll NEVER use all 500 of 'em- if anyone wants in on a group buy i'll host it!

I sent him an email this morning asking him if he would do single or multiple "master boxes" (10 units) from the pallet. I can't afford 250 of them, but 20 I can do. He hasn't answered yet. Now the question becomes, "Do I NEED 20 more of them?' ;D ;D ;D

Peace,

I REALLY hope it's ala pallet! The UPS guy would KILL ME!!! :-/

The info from Evertek is that there are 10 units per "master box" (23 lbs.). The "master boxes" I have received before have 10 units stacked with styrene holders in a cardboard box. There are 35 master boxes to the pallet (350 units @ 767 lbs.)

heruursciences-if you organized a group buy for those things for a good chunk lower than geeks.com, you would be my hero. ;D

Think of it this way: the cheapest DVD-ROM drive on Newegg is $21.99 with $7 of shipping.

Harvest tons of the 405nm diodes, then resell the drives as DVD/CD-ROM only for like $10 :D

Keep in mind that they are all untested.

Ont of the 18 I tried, I could not get ANY to read a HD-DVD! :'(

I did get the ones with the labels to read both regular dvd's and home made. The read/rip speed for cd's is INSANE. :D I got a box without labels that i haven't tested yet.

If you ripped the heads out, don't pitch the boards from 'em- they have VERY NICE smd MOSFETS that can be used for diy boster mods.

Did U know?
You must have winDVD HD or Ultra DVD software to read HD DVD about $80 and a compliant HDvid card and HD monitor!

whats the easiest way to get these diodes out of their original heat sink?

I've been working on one for about an hour and its still stuck in there. any help is appreciated!

edit: after 1.5 hours i finally got it free. i was using some cutting pliers to chip away at the aluminum heat sink. is there an easier way? thx

also, is this still the same pin layout? i assume it is b/c it looks like this and i dont see why manufacturers would switch it up.

Just clip away at the brittle heatsink and you'll eventually free the diode.

I simply grab the heat sink on both "longer" sides with pliers (make sure you aren't "grabbing" the diode), hold tight, and twist gently in opposite directions. The heat sink breaks away easily.

Peace,
