I took both of the diodes out of the xbox 360 hd dvd player (higher powered one btw). I'm confused as to which one is the blu ray. I thought the blu rays had 5 pins. The ones I have have a 3 pinned diode and a 4 pinned diode. Which is which?

The five pin diodes were from the old PS3 sleds. The three pin diode is the blu-ray diode. Does it have the black "sign/tattoo/figure/hieroplyphic" on the back?

The diodes from PS3 sleds had 5 pins, the ones from xbox HD drives have 3.

This is the pin out:

Uh-oh. I thought that the 4 pinned diode was the blu ray, and therefore did not handle the 3 pinned with care. No damage done though thank god. So the 4 pinned is the dvd reader?

The stamp on the back looks like the Japanese version to our barcodes. In Japan you can use your cell phone to read similar looking tags on say, McDonalds food wraps. By doing this it gives you the nutritional info, as well as many other functions. From the mark on my 6x diode, it looks like it to me but thats just a guess.

Is it ok to test the diode with a direct power supply and no resistors or drivers or anything? if so, do you connect the positive or negative first?
