Nichia Exhibits 3 Watt Laser 445nm Diode !

Just received info on this 3 Watt 445nm Laser Diode shown at the Photonics West Exhibit.

''Feb 2, 2009

Atsuo Michiue from Nichia, detailed the performance of a buried-stripe 445 nm laser with a double quantum well active region and a 15 µm by 2 µm emitting area. No catastrophic optical damage - the common failure mode for high-power semiconductor lasers - was observed at output powers of up to 3W.

This edge-emitter produced a threshold current of 185 mA, a wall plug efficiency that peaked at 24.3 percent, and had an estimated lifetime of over 30,000 hours. Far-field beam divergence measurements were 38.2° in the perpendicular direction, and 11.7° in the parallel direction.

One member of the audience asked if Nichia had managed to push the wavelength of its lasers beyond 488 nm, only to be met by the terse reply “top secret”.''

Looks like higher power and more colors are on the way. :)

That's pretty amazing :)

I wonder how far down they'll manage to get the wavelength, looks like nichia is doing their best to aim for the laser projector market.

Is that single mode?

I would doubt it..

Laser Televisions are a hot new technology that requires DPSS lasers at the moment. This is cost and size prohibitive, so much of the work being done with laser diodes is to provide true green and blue diodes to complement the already common red diodes. Once these TVs become commonplace, so should the diodes. This is great news for the hobbyist as they should be readily available from TV repair outlets..

~520nm is the goal for that brilliant green in laser TVs and projectors, it'll likely get there. Heck, maybe someone already has it, and are just waiting for some business reasons. But they haven't announced it, and like they replied during their presentation, it's top secret either way. Nobody's talking.

And it's likely not single mode, but single and multi- are just relative anyway. But the highest reported power is probably all modes.

Well, Half here now... (1.5w 445 diodes)

I expect the 3W to show up soon.

Dear Lord.

Kids running around with 3W pointers???

Am I the only one worried a little ?

When I get laser eye surgery, I'm gonna ask for the "anti-laser coating"

doesnt sound like they will be great for use in pointers. besides, what battery could cope with a 3W diode? lol. i guess with the right driver its possible, if you dont mind large capacity usage.

The AW 18650 battery has a max rated output of 5.2W... so it could easily handle the current draw of a 3W diode.

And it's just a matter of time... can't wait! I personally don't really care about power greater than 1W, but would LOVE to have a full rainbow display of lasers!

The Sanyo 2600mah batteries can deliver over 10 watts of power easily.

That is a 2.4 watt laser diode @ 24% efficiency.

Ha! I was at the eye doctor the other week and mentioned getting something of the sort...like protective glasses cut to my prescription. It can be done, but until everyone that has glasses discovers how fun lasers can be, the cost would be..blah.

As far as coating your eyeballs, Im sure some Dr in China would attempt that for you, now. lol

<--cant stand the thought of placing things on to the surface of his eyes. O.O
