"This might be old news" First I heard of this being approved by BDA. I don't keep a close eye on what the Blu-ray Disc Association is doing since I know y'all will post it.
Hopefully 3D movies will help push adoption & lower prices without an unbearable wait.... Are we there yet?!?!

Press release April 2, 2010.

HaloBlu;

This new spec will require higher power to write 3 or 4 layer BR discs.

That will require 450 to 500mw BR diodes.

Initially, the applications appear to be data storage.

That means the quantities will be smaller and the prices higher . . .

but they will be available.

I wonder IF current Blu-Ray burners will get a firmware update to be able to burn those 4 layer discs? Probably not I'm guessing, since they had to come out with a 500mw diode to do that. I also wonder about Blu-Ray stand alone players, will they be able to play a 4 layer disc?

Thanks for sharing this info, I think anyone wanting to buy a Blu-Ray player or recorder might want to wait awhile to see where this goes.

Sharp Diode - Most of these semiconductor laser diode mfg's have ongoing R&D, so like Intel, they go with their place in the market and release what is needed for a new BR player or Quad/Octal core CPU (which they most probably already have working) Many companies work directly with universities and labs to produce new laser diodes with lower Threshold Current and output, also using different chemical compounds for manufacturing. I too look forward to whatever the big boys like Sharp, Sanyo, Nichia will release in production quantity in the near future!! They way just go down in wavelength, deeper into UV to obtain smaller focal spot...IMHO

Everyone seems to be fascinated with developing new, higher contrast TVs for our super blu-rays, but we might be seeing something totally different once the technology develops. Apple got a patent for 3D video glasses, so who knows what they're going to do with that. Apple Wants Us to Wear 3D iPod Glasses I personally don't really care. I'm just going to rip the diode out of those things and stick it in a nice little flashlight host so I can burn things in my free time. :D
