Wicked Lasers has released its new "Sonar Extreme" that goes up to 400 mW!

The $2,797.97 price tag is a major turn-off, though. :\

what kind of diode would they be using to advertise 400mW

looks nice.. but still
2800$ is just too much

Wicked probably uses a 8x diode being driven to its limits.

It's entirely possible to make 400 mW Blu-Ray lasers today, but many members are reluctant to do so because this shortens the life of the diode.

I seriously doubt that they are using an over-driven 8X diode. Much more likely is that they have a connection for heavy-duty diodes from a supplier in their parts. Considering the price tag, some really nice diodes have possibly found their way into that host.

Remember they are a company and not hobby builders, which means extensive testing to ensure product durability/feasibility. On that note the 500mw 650nm Spyder III also caught my eye? Me thinks, they have found themselves a very good diode supplier.

On another note, the SONAR is a damn sexy case, my only functional blu-ray build atm, not biased though. :p

I think the price will just allow them to replace your 8x diode as many times as needed for the guarantee year.

Also, Jayrob, igorT... are just as profesional as them. If a better diode than the 8x existed you can be sure the first to know it would be the bluray drives manufactureres, not wickedlasers, and so we would know it too.

Well, first of all, I was not saying anything bad about the quality of Igor's or Jayrobs work....I am a proud owner of an LPM IgorT built for me, and it is perfect for my needs, wouldn't trade it for anything.

I am however saying that companies do not work in the same way that builders such as jayrob and igor operate, there is a lot more procedure, testing and thought (liability wise etc.) put into a product before it is released.

And to say that diodes found in blu-ray drives are top-of-the-line of what is availible at the moment, is ridiculous. Company A releases 8x blu-ray burner, manufactures 100+k drives. The same week a new diode is availble with more power/higher reliability...you think that they are going to jump and put a 12x on the market instantly!? It is simple business, I am sure the 8x diodes were availible long before we had 8x drives on the market, due to the simple reason of getting rid of old stock....

However, I am not saying that these are 100% not 8X diodes, all I am saying that I highly doubt that they are. Being a Chinese company I am sure they have connection or have acquired some since the SONAR II which used a diode out of a drive or BR component IIRc.

This laser is very clearly using a diode which is over driven, as of now, for that price, there are no single emitter diodes which emit 400mW with a beam of any quality. There is a slight chance that it actually 2 diodes which are combine with a PBS cube, however, they would still be over driving he diodes to get to a price point where they can make money on the product.

Wicked could be using the diode from Sony BWU-300S, 240mA puts out 400mW.
A $400 drive is nothing if they can sell the Laser for $2800.

I wonder how long this diode has been performing at the upper range? Maybe it's a freak?

Someone must buy one so we can see whats inside, me thinks its waaaayyyy overpriced though.
