I completely agree - I mean, how many times can you reinvent a metal tube??

IIRC... I think it was the Greeks or Romans that invented the metal tube for irrigation/water transport...
Correct me if I'm wrong... ::)

I think people forget this is a hobby sometimes. Its a tube with holes in it LOL. No one can make claim on this basic design. I read Spoz's thread and all I saw was "WHAAAA it looks like a Kryton", but most people fail to note it was not a Kryton. So all the crying was for nothing IMO. This is not a retail store folks, its a public forum and people are allowed to improve/change existing products and sell them. That's why we have lens mods, host mods, ect. Mods keep the hobby interesting, and "intellectual property" only exists in copyrighted, and patented materials.

I don't think anyone would say a word if you posted these on the B,S,T section.

Wow. That is very cool! I would so want one! I need to get sticky labels so I can put one on my laser! It's funny how you put it on a Styrofoam plate to make it seem professionally displayed. Unless you did it because it creates a good shadow and lighting effects.

Taking a cue from Spyderz's comment, the only part of the finished laser that is a tad aesthetically incongruous id the protruding focus ring.

Of course, the question is: "If the ring is inside the housing, then how the (insert expletive) am I supposed to focus it?!"

What do you think of this idea:
(excuse the crudity of the sketch, I did it during lunch today after reading this topic, so it's not to scale or even straight)
FOCUSINGSLEEVE.jpg

As I see it, you could make the focusing ring unobtrusive by housing it in an assebly that's comprised of an exterior sleeve, made to match with the rest of the host, that slides into the host and is anchored by two or more set screws in a groove around its base (this would keep it from falling out while still allowing it to turn). Inside this sleeve, you'd have the interface ring (circular sketches) which would have two tongues on the interior that would fit into two matching grooves you'd cut into the focusing ring (allowing the ring to slide up and down along these 'tracks' while you turn the entire assembly).

Keep in mind that the sketch is bad. Everything looks like it fits loosely, but that's just to clearly show how everything would fit together.

I'm sure there's a simpler way to solve the problem, but I'm fond of reinventing the wheel.

" Keep in mind that the sketch is bad."

You crack me up. That "sketch" is fantastic!

I have a thought. How about replacing the set screws with a fat O-ring or two that give a nice snug pressure fit? It should tighten things up a bit and you wouldn't have to worry about the screws abrading the groove and throwing shavings.

There's plenty of room for improvement on my concept. :-[

Perhaps even just fitting little plastic dowels over the ends of the set screws?
That way, they could be tightened up a little more and give some satisfyingly smooth drag to the action, while not abrading the groove.

Good lookin' out, Droog ;)

Dark Horse makes a cap the goes on the focus ring. Its held on with a rubber sleeve. Probably a cut clicky dust cover.
