Does anyone else think companies selling vastly overpowered lasers is a bit danegerous?

Well yes, but if you know you have a 200mW laser in your hands your going to take more precautions than with something that was sold as <5mW. I had two strong lasers (100mW according to specs, who knows what the real number was) and I was always extremely careful with them because I knew the dangers (even tried shining one on an old camera phone and it burned a few pixels on the camera).
However if something is marketed as eye safe and actually isn't... well that's something I just think is wrong.

I think this is really the way people should treat all lasers, but I understand what you're saying too. They should at least be labeled as being within a certain range so you know if it really is dangerous or not.
Yes, the label thing is what's bothering me - just label them correctly so that people know what they are buying. I don't mind strong lasers in general if the owners are responsible. But calling a laser eye safe then selling it when it's actually 80 mW.... As far as I'm concerned that's wrong.

Unfortunately it is cheaper to make them overspec now, and businesses really dont care about the people in general. It /is/ wrong

Of course, but with my stronger two, I never carried them with the batteries inside (to prevent them from accidentally turning on in my pocket) , never pointed at anything that could reflect in some ones eyes (so basically in the sky or some far away lawn). And those were weak compared to some of the stuff people build here (according to specs the green one was 20mW and the purple one 30mW).
Whit my current <5mW red I'm a little less worried about injuries, but I still don't point it in peoples (or my cats) eyes and avoid reflective surfaces. Just in case.

Yeah the so called "<5mW" pointers all over ebay are all false, most are easily 50mW-80mW. Gotta be careful, no matter what power your laser is. Even the weakest ones are easily more damaging than the sun

Even reflective surfaces can be dangerous... bottom line, always use goggles

well for one thing- a 405 with that power may be hard to see at all -- even by a cat.

I have a 5mW 405nm i got from laserbtb, aka skylaser. IIRC, it was about ~$18 plus shipping. Thats the only place i have found one that low power.

You could also try thinkgeek.com I can't guarantee that their 5mW purple is actually 5mW but I would think so as the laser pens that I know from there have always been 5mW

Cats can see farther into the UV range than we can, so a dot that we can barely see is a bright spot to them.
Also I just received a 405nm pen style pointer that was tested with an LPM at 78.4mw peak and 74.7 Average and it is nowhere near the output from a QQTech I got from Amazon.. The QQTech burns holes in white paper. They both say the same <5mw Class III.
