Not if you get the stock driver. it's only if you want to upgrade to a lava drive that you have to pay for a driver. The lava drive with the barrel purchase is only $12 instead of $20.

The barrel comes with everything you need to make a laser with the exception of one thing. Batteries (which you can add to your order if you desire) and a laser diode.

I'm running a Kennom Kryton with two rcr123 cells.  The driver is from my junkbox using a LDO 5 Volt CV regulator.   The Kryton provides many options for batteries, driver and mods.

Wish I had known earlier.... I saw the order page and assumed that it was only the empty barrel and you had to supply everthing else :-[ ...

I have every confidence that once you build one laser, you will find a use for these additional components ;)

If you are going to be in this hobby, you need to start building your "junk box". That is where you find all the parts for your next build project ;D

**scribbles quickly** need to start junk box

Another weird thing that happens is you start spending time in the "flashlight" aisle at the store . . . .

My junk box is huge... and I've only been building high powered lasers for a few months now! :D

Ok, say I used something like this as a host http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5352
Would I have to heat sink it?
Im really on the fence on this kryton barrel thing...do you think I would have trouble selling an aixiz module and 32-150mA lava drive( both un used)  in the BST section?
Assuming i dont have to machine or build a heat sink, the kryton route is only 24$ more, which is a hit I could take...

Oh and Kenom, are the 14500's you sell with the barrel protected?

If you used the host you posted here, you would still have to heatsink it. However, you could probably get away with a simply round spacer type heatsink. It wouldn't require a custom lathe job.

The Kryton option might not be so good for you because of lack of availability right now. Those that have them are reluctant to part with them and the next generation is still at the machine shop.

If you haven't used the lavadrive (is it the flexdrive?) you should have no trouble selling it for what it costs. You will probably have to eat the postage on it though. They are still available from drlava for the price plus shipping. I doubt that anyone will want to give you your shipping cost and pay their own shipping cost on something that is still available.

What about the barrels linked in his signature? Says expected 6/1/08.

Those are the ones at the machine shop. Group buys sometimes take significantly longer than estimated. They are a ways off yet.
