i think i'm am going to go with rechargables since i am spending way too much on batteries....$10 for 2x CR2 at wal-mart (non-rechargeable).

and i think i will just put 3x CR2 batteries in the host for 9v.
of course this adds alot of room and only about a quarter of the module would fit in the host afterwards.....and i'd have to remove heatsink, but it doesn't really even heat up anyways without the heatsink....

i'll prob save the heatsink anyways for when i try pushing one of these phr diodes.

it works fine with 6v.......but theres a big difference in brightness and how quickly it burns once you get past the 7.4v mark....gotta have it

Yeah. Below 7.4V the Rkcstr isn't really in regulation yet. The laser's output will be significantly reduced below that voltage.

ok, i raised it again to 141mA.

i'm done raising the power now, i swear!!!

i think.......

or............maybe........:D

lol no really, i'm done

I have been running mine at 150mA for well over a month, and I've used it at least a few minutes every day. I'd say that I've run it at least several straight hours. It still stings my skin in a few seconds focused to infinity.

hello guys, i have one quesiton which is very similar to the topic question..

how far can i push a PHR803 diode without heatsink????? i mean LD only in a aixiz module...

i am curious because i have seen lots of DIY project which are using ONLY leadlight host {pen style} and runs on 140mw...

could anybody establish what is safe current or MW for driving LD without heatsink??? i am asking ""without heatsink" as i dont compare leadlight host as heatsink... ;D

cheers

A couple of things:

First, a leadlight IS a heat sink. It's not as much of one as a Jayrob in an MXDL, but it is a sink

Second, a leadlight (and the like) have a momentary switch/button. Unless you "tie it down", a diode in a leadlight will be on for shorter amounts of time in each burn.

Third, you are right. Violet diodes do not generate nearly the heat that a red does. However, running one without heat sinking above about 120mA will cause it to need a sink.

well maybe i could wrote, that i dont compare leadlight host like PROPER heatsink as it is really tiny piece of metal... so sorry for this leadlight, but on the other hand you are right = it is still a SINK..
you answered exactly what i wanted to know as i would like to run it only for a moment - coule of seconds and not for a 2-3 minutes continuos running...
so summary is

short period ON
and
max of 120mA without heatsink-ing

is my conclusion right????
have i missed anything???
is there anything more what you can recommend????

thank you very much

That should be fine. Of course there is never really any guarantees with diodes, but I would accept doing it that way and it has been done successfully before.
