Just pointing out that geeks.com will eventually run out of the drives we love. PHR-803t drives are the older ones, and are no longer made. Since these are used drives, and with the amount that are being ordered now, they oughtta run out soon, so you should probably get them while you can.

A month ago they had over 800. Do you think that WE are the only ones buying this DVD? Some people actually want to play DVD's for less money than new.

Peace,
dave

Unfortunately for me the shipping to Holland is VERY expensive.
I would love to experiment a little with this diode, but I'm out of luck. :'(

The evertek link doesn't work for me.Does starsurplus only ship in the US? :-/ Maybe I can get less shipping fees than geeks.com....otherwise I'm left with the 40 dollar PSXboy. :(

Timbo, I would not mind shipping these to you in Holland if you want a couple. The smart thing to do is to just ship the sleds or the diodes in their heatsinks. I paid $43.50 for two drives once they added their $9.00 shipping to it. It appears that a standard International first class envelope would be about $1.20. So to cover my pain to go to the post office, a flat $50 would get them to you either as sleds or as diodes in heatsinks - your choice. PM me if you want. I am a relative newby here so I cannot produce a lot of folks to vouch for me in this forum, but I can produce individual proof in private communication that I am a person you can trust.

it seems evertek.com is for wholesalers only...

I almost feel like getting a business license just to be able to set up a GB... at $13.80 each it'd totally be worth it...

Anyone with a business license feel like buying a hundred of these? Senkat?

Didn't you happen to notice the "quantity in stock" number? They have exactly ZERO in stock, just like Geeks.com.

What we've probably been dealing with is that there was a run of these DVD drives that had a problem with the laser sled originally used. They were ALL called (or held) back and "refurbished" with an available sled (the PHR-803t sled). The PHR was probably NOT original equipment. It certainly doesn't need the 803t sled to READ DVD's. Now we are coming to the end of the refurbished run. We may have to find what is actually using this sled as original equipment (if it is still being used).

There is another possibility that the PHR sleds were "surplus" to begin with. That may be why we found them in the 360 add on units (another place that did not NEED the 803t diode) as well. They may have been produced in expectation of being used in the HD DVD format before blu-ray won the war. If that is the case, then Microsoft and Toshiba got them cheap.

If the end of the manufacturing run is what we are dealing with, then we best be scouring the other "surplus" type resellers to find the remaining stock. Otherwise it might be time to find a new one (or go back to being 6X elitists).

I'm not saying this to alarm anyone (much). I'm just saying that EVERYBODY needs to keep their eyes open for other sources of the Toshiba unit and/or the 803t sled and/or a replacement part.

Nuts.

when I first saw this like a week ago they had at least a thousand...

I hope whoever's buying these to resell as optical drives gets stuck with tons of unmovable stock.
