Freak PHR-803T diode???

I recently extracted the diode from a PHR803T sled. I installed it in an Aixiz module and hooked it to my lab supply. It is currently running at 300ma. It ha been running there for over 30 minutes and the module isn't even warm.
When I began the test, I ramped up the current and at approx 30ma. the diode begins to faintly lase. I continued to ramp up the current and at 100ma. it goes from dim to bright. At 100 ma. the voltage is 4.04v. I continued to ramp up the current and get the following readings:

current volts

100 4.04
150 4.24
200 4.37
250 4.46
300 4.53
400 4.65
500 4.71

I have gone over 750ma and the booger keeps getting brighter. Sure wish I had a power meter.....

My lab supply is based around the FlexMod P3. I have lit the red diode from the LPC-815 sled as well as the Casio 140 blue diode and the current and voltage readings seem to correspond to the printed specs. The only specs. I found on the PHR diode says max current of 150ma. This diode seems to just wake up at 100ma. Do my readings seem abnormal for this diode??

Holy Shit. I have never heard of outputs like these with these diode! Are you sure it's not a 12x? Lol Voltage makes sense, Blus are known for using lots of Vs but that is amaing that it hasn't fried.

I don't get how it hasn't Led'd yet. Can we see what the diode output looks like? (No lens)

How are you heatsinking it may I ask?

I harvested this diode from a PHR803T sled myself. I looked at the old sled and the sticker on it said PHR 803T. I bought two of these. I will have to harvest the other one shortly and see how they compare.

I mounted this diode in an Aixis module and am using the included lens. When going thru the focus, it will make a definate focused dot, but when unfocused, looks a lot like the Casio 140 diode....rectangular. But this is definately a violet (405) diode. The color is much deeper blue than the 140. Without the lens there is no pattern at all, just a huge round blob of light.

I hooked my Casio 140 diode up to make comparison readings. I ran it up to 1 amp and the beam looks exactly like my handheld homebrew that is also running at 1 amp so the current readings appear correct. Strange...:thinking:

Freak diodes of any sort are not unheard of, they just don't last for very long. If you only have two of these then I would suggest turning it down for a good life. 300mA is scary high current for these and I wish you luck with it, (it may be a record or a different diode than normal but who can tell?). It seems that when one of these crops up then people want to maintain the current. Sadly, this always ends the same way...

Sounds like a 6X GGW to me. They have almost an oval spot unfocused. Do the 8X, or 12X have oval, rectangular beams?

Most BR diodes show a big fat bar when unfocused or with no lens. Same as red diodes. This is likely to be just a freak PHR or a diode that was picked up at short notice, and cheap, that fullfilled the requirements for production.

With higher output diodes becoming available at much cheaper rates then it may well be a, "6x", or even an, "8x", put into a PHR sled, but not knowing this for sure means you risk the diode you have at high currents. The best advice, regardless of what you are getting from it, is to turn it down.

If you had 20 of them to test then go ahead and burn the h3ll out it but you don't so enjoy the free power... But not too much...

I did't know you could tell what diode it was by looking at the back.

not all the diodes ..... but PHR have characteristic 2D barcode marks on back, so can be recognized (at least 99% surely :p)

I'll try to get a pic of the diode today. Never used the macro setting for anything that small.

This diode does have a barcode on the back. I tried to take a pic, but my camera didn't want any part of it. The code looks similar to your pic, in that there is the double square in the upper left corner. The dot pattern in the rest of the code is different.
The 8X has a rather elongated beam but not really oval. woah woah woah, did you say, DEEPER BLUE? Not VIOLET? Ok now that scares me.....

EDIT: 100th post!

Sorry, what I ment to say was the color is deeper blue/violet than my Casio 140 diode.
Taz, can you remove the lens and take a picture of the spot on a wall?

I will get some pics today.

PHR803Tspot.jpgHere is a shot of the unfocused spot on a wall at about 5 ft. The spot is about 3 inches wide. The lens is still attached, just defocused. Could not get my room dark enought to see the pattern without a lens.

Looks just like any other 405nm diode output. The more power there is, the less obvious the oval is, but its still definitely there.

What would be good to know are your output power readings...

Laser funds are a little short at this time...Seems like everything renews at this time of the year. Hope to order a laser power meter soon. Just need to make up my mind which one I need/can afford.

To me, it looks like nospin's looks pretty good. and has a big range so you wont seed to update.
