Ok, daguin already asked this question, but i don't think it was answered..

The last two are really cheap, but does anyone know what they are? They all look like complete sleds, but the first one is much larger.

Is it possible, that the other two are not even 405nm lasers, or what's the deal here?

I believe the last 2 listed aren't HD DVD diodes, just regular Xbox 360 DVD reader diodes.

I just noticed PSX-BOY improved their shipping options. Before they only had very expensive shipping methods, now they offer cheap registered air-mail, so i'm very tempted to order some of these.

It looks like the first link listed is the one with the more powerful 405nm diode. It has the same part number as the ones I pulled the good diodes out of. PHR-803T.

I have two of these already in the mail from PSXboy. We'll know soon after they arrive. Or you could take a chance like I did $40 is expensive for a 30mW blu-ray, but VERY inexpensive for a 90mW blu-ray. I figured at the very least, I would have a couple of 30mW ones in the can. Isn't the price on the PS3 sleds around $40 as well?

Those were around $30, or $27 in the GB, but the GB went bad when PSX-BOY changed the prices from what was originally agreed upon.
We ended up paying $30 or so, so i could have just ordered them from PSX-BOY directly when the price was still $30, and had them months ago.


I have three PS3 sleds on the way, but after seeing this, i would much rather have ordered 3 HD-DVD ones for the price of 4 PS3 sleds.

Oh well. You can never have too many lasers i guess.. :


But it would seem the PS3 sleds also occasionally contain the more powerful type of the diode. Not sure if it's as powerful as the good HD-DVD ones, but Chimo once got 78mW out of one by mistake. He had one with a higher Vf that was putting out just 10mW or so on a boost circuit, so he put the other one into the same circuit, and at first just thought it was brighter.. In the end it burnt its own window! He had to remove the can and it was still putting out almost 80mW.

It would seem there are two different types of diodes in the PS3 sleds as well, so i hope i get at least one that is powerful. Now that i think of it, even if the diodes look and are built different from the outside, they could contain the same dies from the same manufacturer.. Or maybe not, since that one has three diodes in one can. But i have no idea how the dies are mounted on top of each other, so who knows..

I took apart my 360 HD-DVD player to attempt a harvest. I got mine when it was still $199. I was able to get the red out fine. I have no way to see if it still works though. I messed up the 405nm diode though. I noticed that the ones harvested in the beginning of this topic are kind of domed shaped. Mine was the typical can shape. It had the same part number that is listed on psxboy.

Just the heatsink is dome shaped. Once you get that off it's just a can.

I might have to buy one of those sleds if the life expectancy is good. I'd probably run it at 70-80mA. I would ideally want >50mW out of it.

I think i'll order three. One is definitely going to be put through some "torture". Hopefully i can get a decent amount of 405nm out of it. I'll probably treat the other two more gently. At least until i know what they are capable of.

And to think, that i was considering buying a $400+ 6x Blue Ray writer just a day or two ago.. Well, those would probably last much longer, but three of these might just make it long enough for the Blue Ray writers to drop in price.

that's what i've been thinking, make sure to post your findings - this may be a very viable solution to buying an expensive DPSS blue for my scanner im building

I really hope i get a freak diode in my PS3 sleds order as well. I got one last time, but killed it with ESD, because i was powering the driver with a PSU, which provided a path to the ground. You can't imagine how depressed i was. :'(

for some reason this refuses to become common knowledge, even though I've posted it several times and it could save many a diode:


With most drivers, 1K or so will discharge the cap plenty fast but not materially affect the circuit.

You can figure the extra current it will draw: in parallel with a 4V laser diode, a 1K ohm R would draw 4mA, not that much more load for your driver.

And according to this RC Time Constant Calculator, a 1K resistor will discharge a 10uf cap to only 10% of its charge in 23 milliseconds. (and to 1% in 46 msec)

And: Do NOT use a PSU to power the driver! You can just touch the module to reposition it or something, and then you're left wondering why it suddenly only has 1/4 of the original output. You don't even necessarily feel the spark. 405nm diodes are especially sensitive to ESD. I had to learn the hard way.

Using batteries to power the driver reduces ESD danger practically to zero, because there is no path to the ground.
