Re: [Dual 411nm 1335mW] 2D MAG with PBS cube & Newport mounts.

I'm wanting to add a second diode to my big expanded output host now, I wonder how much loss is typical through one of those cubes at 520nm?

HHmmmm ??? Contemplating some Combiner action...are we ???

Two (2) green's @ 520nm line...2+Watts of 520 beauty !!!!!!

You will need to run one (1) beam thru a wave plate...to maintain beam-on-beam orientation and rotate the polarization to work with the PBS.

I would approx. under 10% loss between the PBS and Waveplate optics...maybe 7~8% Optic r FUN !!!

Re: [Dual 411nm 1335mW] 2D MAG with PBS cube & Newport mounts.

I dont mind having the beams cross one another like a big + due to the rectangular output of these diodes, but would the beams cancel eachother crossing at 90 degrees in the center? If the beam is going to be expanded anyway, maybe a cube isn't necessary and some kind of knife edge will work? I better start googling the answers! Will be researching on this for awhile.

Edit: nevermind the knife edge idea, the beam needs to be turned 90 degrees and not much room. Looks like I need a polarizing beam splitter cube.

Yikes....it will be a long answer....First....if the beams cross....they will not cancel each other out !! So....you will get a + shape...yes....So...where the beams cross...at the center....this square will present the highest luminosity....because...this is where the highest concentration of photons are.

SO....you can do this....a cross or plus.....one LD longer bar goes up/down....and the other LD longer bar goes left/right

When using a PBS ( Polarized Beam Splitter )...the beams MUST enter the PBS cube with their polarization at 90 degree to each other for the cube to work properly.

There are two (2) ways to do this !!!

1) The beams are at a 90 degree polarization to each other. This condition is seen when the longer bar geometries make a cross / + pattern. So...Beam 1 hits the front of the PBS cube with a shape that looks like this I and the Beam 2 hits the side of the PBS with a shape that looks like this ---
In this situation....the polarization is correct....and the PBS cube can and does combine the beams !!

2) Now...this is a little more complicated !!! BOTH beams enter the PBS cube..... like this I or this --- BUT.....One of the beams must pass thru what is known as a 1/4 wave waveplate......BEFORE it enters the cube.
The waveplate rotates the electromagnetis field....by 1/4 turn....and thereby sets up the condition where the polarization is correct....and the PBS cube can and does combine the beams !!
BUT....in the above layout.....you do NOT get a cross shape....for the beam geometry is NOT rotated.....just the polarization.....so in this case....one gets a beam-on-beam condition.....so NO cross....just a fat bar !!!!!

A PBS can and does work in either lay out. With the second condition...I believe the resulting spot at the far field....may look a little brighter....but....
with the cross....the far field look more like a spot...vs a bar !!!

MMmmmm....I like'em both !!!!!....and have used a PBS with each method !!!
Aren't optics fun !!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, I like the crossed beam idea, but if I do use a wave plate, can you link me to something I can use for this to put both beams together into one bar on the output? Thank you so much for explaining this to me.

Chris,

For Optics, I use;

1) Optical Components
2) Lasershow Parts
3) https://www.lasertack.com/en/t/imprint

All three have good optics....for much less than Edmonds or Thor !!

Delivery time is a slight PITA....BUT....All three places are run by really good people !!!

I really like and use the Flexmounts to mount my optics. There are micro MM1 mounts....but ...they come up on fleabay....rarely !!

I have a method for using epoxy to attach the FS Bounce mirror, Dichroic mirror, PBS cube or wave plate to the Flexmount.

If anybody is interested....post here....and I will Word Smith an outline document !!! Again....LESS epoxy is the RULE !!! That crap gets on everything !!!!

Using optics is challenging....to mix, combine or knife edge beams....

And one best have some patience to do a proper alignment !!! But....the result is worth it !!!!!!!! Combiners Rule !!!

OK, I've been wondering what I should use to glue a FS mirror on to something please do tell and thank you for the links. I went ahead and bought a cube: PBS 520nm 532nm Green Polarization Beamsplitter Polarizing Cube Laser Diode | eBay

The epoxy I use is labled..." ACE clear resin 5min epoxy "....just from Ace Hardware....works good....available everywhere...even in Alaska !!!

But...do NOT dick around with your positioning too long....for ya got about 5min....and then is starts to stiffen up !!

Re: [Dual 411nm 1335mW] 2D MAG with PBS cube & Newport mounts.

I'll use epoxy all the time especially to hold drivers after soldering to diode pins. Put dabs on the corners to the module sink so it doesn't flex. Always 5 minute epoxy. Have tried quite a few with good results all around IF you are careful about getting equal parts and blend well.
Personally I do a quick premix with something like a toothpick and then spread it over itself many many time in different directions using a razorblade. There's kind of an art to knowing when it's right and how much time you have to work with it.
Definately agree with less is better! Man can it turn on you with one false move. Nothing fun about realizing you just got some on a finger and you are handling something critical.

If your tie stays inflated for longer than four hours, contact a tailor immediately or serious problems could occur?

I want to combine a single mode laser diode with a multimode diode using a cube, but the focus points for infinity will be different, I fear.

Re: [Dual 411nm 1335mW] 2D MAG with PBS cube & Newport mounts.

Using 2 NUBM44s, power consumption would require a 3D maglite and 3 x 32650 batteries.

I had a brainstorm regarding the use of .5in Newport MM-050-HEX mounts.

The mirror cube and Mounts could all be secured with just enough compound to hold them in place for alignment adjustments.

Once adjustments are made the cube and mirror could be secured with compound directly to the sink/mount assembly.

At that point since the Newport mounts are only secured with minimal adhesive they could be removed and reused.

This would also allow the building of much smaller diode arrays of this type.
