Holy crap. That, it's like.. a merging of being able to see the internals of HeNe, with the power of diodes, and the... exotic wavelength..ness... of an exotic wavelength.

411nm.... o_o .... 411nm... c_c

Some of your 405's may be 411nm or higher- from what I've seen, that high of wavelength shift isn't that uncommon. The 415nm lasers that CNI sells are just binned diodes. Makes you wonder how high one could actually go?

Have kept a lookout, I don't think any of mine are, unfortunately.. I know Qumefox ended up with one at something crazy like 418, and he has our spectrometer right now.

I bet there are some 420+ out there.

There are some lots of 100 405nm low power diodes on ebay/aliexpress, like this one: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/50pc...-Diode-LD-SLD3134VL-TO18-5-6mm/890671109.html

Might be other cheaper listings.

I'm pretty sure if you buy a lot and bin 'em all you'll get at least one 415nm-420nm freak.

If you get a few freaks you could sell the 2nd/3rd best and so on to get some of your money back.

And don't forget about the low freaks. I'd surely like a true-UV laser at 490nm or something :p

Edit:
Cheaper source for 20mW diodes (the source above is for 50mW): http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-...-Diode-LD-SLD3135Vl-TO18-5-6mm/957714104.html

Here's how I'd do it:
Make a linear, low current driver plugged to a wall wart and connect it to a "socket" so you can plug the diodes in without soldering. At this power I think it's safe to power them for a few seconds without pressing to a module.
I'd have an on/off switch for the driver and a second switch between the diode leads to short them and discharge the filter cap. The socket would be held by a helping hand on a fixed position.
Procedure: turn off driver - switch to short leads - unplug diode - plug other diode - unshort legs - turn on driver - measure - repeat
The whole procedure would probably take only one hour or so if you have a spectrometer.
With a grating you'd need to set up a more complicated rig to focus it through the grating (fixed) at the wall.

If I had a spectrometer I'd have ordered that lot already. Perhaps someone with one is willing to do this and resell or maybe do a GB for the highest/lowest diodes?

or just use push buttons and save yourself the .4 seconds every time :p
Good idea though. although im not sure how many people would be interested if the diodes are that low powered, since the edges of the visible spectrum are never very bright. Ive had a true <5mW 405, and its stupidly hard to see- at least for me, everyones eyes are different.

I can see 30mW of 405nm just fine. TBH I don't think the color difference would be obvious even if we got one at 390nm and the other at 420nm (but that's just me guessing).. the difference should be mostly in perceived brightness (and fluorescence, which is one of the reasons I'd like a low WL one). It's more of a WL-collection thing.

Either way the higher powers are way too expensive for this.

Another option would be to do it with 635nm to try and find an orange laser. If we manage one at 620nm the difference should be very, very obvious.

Here are the best deals I could find on 635nm. Doable but not as cheap as 405nm:
New 635nm 638nm 5mW TO18 Laser Diode Oranger Red Laser Diode 100 Pcs | eBay
Sales 635nm laser diode 5mw LT LD6305.-in Diodes from Electronic Components & Supplies on Aliexpress.com

Edit: bin those and then TEC-cool them. Orange laser for sure.

You would need liquid nitrogen cooling to get them that low.

I'd love a 420-438nm diode! Mercury has a spectral line right around 436nm that is gorgeous.

As far as visibility goes, it is a well discussed topic here. There are some (like myself) that can detect well below 365nm and thus see >400nm very easily, where as others can barely see hundreds of mW of 405nm.

Jander...THIS is the build that has inspired my latest top-priority project.... The " Royal Blue Ramjet "..... !!!!!!!

A nice Maglight host....for a use with a 470nm LD....being the NUBN07E ( reviewed by Lazereer in this section)

The Maglight form has a sufficient diameter for both a fairly good sized heat sink and Correction optics !!! The use of two (2) 25500 Lipo's will also yield a longer run time between recharges !!! The Maglight is also of good quality AND is a side switch....which I prefer !!! Thanx for your inspiration !!!
