This thread is hilarious. and Tim as woodofcville said you can buy one that would arrive before you need it.

I didn't know my question was going to illicit such responses!

I am planning on demonstrating how sound can travel distances with a laser beam as its carrier. I am going to use a red 5mw laser for that part. I was hoping to make my intro stand out by using a burning laser to light a piece of flash paper - that's all. The laser would be used for just a second or two, and wouldn't be pointed in anyone's direction.

As a group, LPF tends to be rather skeptical and very safety paranoid.

Lasers have fallen in price quite a bit... you can buy a 100mW focusable 405nm laser for under $50, and certainly build one for less. - Link

So when someone comes asking to borrow a laser... it just doesn't pass the smell test... not without extra details.

"As a group, LPF tends to be rather skeptical and very safety paranoid."

Sounds like quite a group! Personally, I'm allergic to group mentalities.

"So when someone comes asking to borrow a laser... it just doesn't pass the smell test... not without extra details. "

"So when someone comes asking"...I realize quite a few members have invested a lot of time & energy into this forum (their choice), but it's still a public forum, so elitism isn't called for. Secondly, nowhere in the forum rules does it state that I have to pass another member's 'test' to satisfy their needs.

Look, I didn't ask for anyone's advice or commentary. I asked to borrow a laser from someone who lived close by, and for them to PM me so we could hash out the details. It was right to the point, so there shouldn't have been any confusion. So, if one doesn't live anywhere near Ohio, and has no intentions of helping me out by honoring my request, then I see no reason for anyone to hang about.

Yeah and we are alergic to "you can trust me send me your Laser"

I guess it goes to the time you've invested on this Forum as
well... and your credibility...

For all we know you are a uniformed 12 year old with no Laser
experience looking for a free Laser...

I've looked at your profile and can't see too much info... there is
no About Me info or age...

Perhaps the members would have been more receptive if you
had stated your intentions for the use of the Laser up front.

Of course you don't need to tell us everything.... but we have
the right to state our opinions whether they are welcome or
not if you or anyone else opens a thread on this public Forum..

Maybe you haven't been around on the Forum long enough... but
we tend to look out for one another and the uninformed new
members.

Good luck borrowing a Laser....

Well hooray for you, here have a cake:bday:

:crackup:Sorry buddy, but you're not allowed to try to satisfy my needs, test or no test. I don't swing that way.

Now about elitism? How about first explaining why or for what you want to borrow a high powered laser in the first place?

Your initial post is not clear at all in this regard, and makes it seem like you just wanted a powerful laser to use as a pointer for a speech presentation.

As you say this is an PUBLIC FORUM, therefore you are not entitled in ANY way to not be questioned. Especially when you're asking something of the people here.

Do you have any idea how many spammers and scammer come on here? This is the interwebz you know.

Look, I didn't ask for anyone's advice or commentary.

No, you just went ahead and asked for a laser. Try going on a gun forum, and asking to borrow a gun. See how well that goes for you.

I asked to borrow a laser from someone who lived close by, and for them to PM me so we could hash out the details.

Also wanting to keep everything private... which is exactly what a scammer would do. Again you came off fishy.

It was right to the point, so there shouldn't have been any confusion.

No you weren't, and that's the problem.

If you stated int he OP that you had the barest knowledge of lasers, laser safety, or intended use, you would not have appeared nearly as strange or suspicious.

So, if one doesn't live anywhere near Ohio, and has no intentions of helping me out by honoring my request, then I see no reason for anyone to hang about.

Tim

Did you miss the part where this is an public forum?

You are not ENTITLED to anything, and you do not own this thread. Anyone is free to post here so long as they follow the TOS.

Now you're just coming off as another entitled prick who thinks the world owes something to him simply for asking. Here's a tip, it doesn't.
