In the picture of the diode (0758), you appear to have solder flowing down onto the remnants of the ribbon board. If the solder flowed under the board or if the board moved down enough to touch the diode case, you will have shorted the diode there.

In all of the shots your excess wire sticking out should be trimmed. ANY of those pieces sticking up could short against the case.

Also, your diode needs to be pressed in further. It should be recessed slightly.

Test the driver as outlined above. Clean up your solder joints. Use flux. Probably, you will be replacing the diode. Remove all remnants of the ribbon cable and board. Insulate the pins with shrink tube and the driver with either shrink tube or tape.

When you re-build. TEST your set-up at EVERY step so you know where it went wrong if it doesn't work.

I test the switch in the host
I test the power leads in the host
I set the driver and double check the current (off/on/off/on/off/on)
I hook up the driver and test it again with the "native" power in the host
I hook up the diode and test it
I heat the shrink tube and test it
I push everything in place and test it
I assemble the entire laser and test it
I focus it and measure the output

No one is perfect. However, by doing that many tests/checks, if it doesn't work along the way, I know where the problem is. I do NOT have to rebuild it to fix it.

Peace,
dave

BTW, for test your dummy load, just get a variable power supply.

Check with the dmm the 1 ohm resistor, for be sure that is not open ..... Connect the dummy load to the power supply, the DMM to the dummy load, and, starting from 2V, slowly increase the output voltage ..... when you arrive just over the diodes dropout voltage, you must start to read on your DMM ..... if so, the dummy load is ok

Hot damn, those are one hell of nice macro photos.

Wish I had such optics for my E400...
Anyway, It appears that 'negative' wire from battery to driver is not properly soldered, and it has a little wire sticking out which could cause a short ...

Other than that, I see no missing bits in component, and just follow what dave said...

nice pics @ OP, and do not listen to lazerboy he is not qualified obviously to give

tech advise on this forum. His eagerness to correct himself was also disappointing.

Hooking an unregulated power source to a diode is a bad senario... if this was taken seriouosly by the OP with a higher priced diode that would have been an injustice to all who have over and over again posted on the proper way to power a diode.

EDIT: I have reread your post and I appologize for the severity of my responce. Next time please be more serious and detailed in your posting
on this subject. Nothing worse than having been confused about the issue of directly hooking your diode to a power source to kill your project. Been there done that. jander6442

It's ok to help. Just be more carefull when helping out noobs...that's all. Mistakes happen. I would just hate to see a new member be steered away from the laser hobby due to being miss led.

Like I said, don't worry about it. People make mistakes, that's what makes us human. It's the people who don't learn from their mistakes, who cause the problems in this world.
