Hey has anybody harvested blue ray diodes from anything besides the PS3s yet? Maybe from a blue ray writer? Sure would like know what drives might be good for stronger diodes... Wonder how many times that question has been asked? Lol...

Success! Here:

But even better! Hemlock Mike and drlava with a 4/6 X harvest! Here:

The blu-ray burners are here now!

2x 120mW
4x 170mW
8x 250mW

Wow! Man, that's good information! Do you know of anybody who has harvested and tested one yet? We need someone who works in an authorized service center to 'snag' the ones they junk...

I don't know anybody that harvested and tested one.
2x burner $400 ;D
4x burner $600 ;D

Re: Blue Ray Diode Harvest?

I'm thinking with the Blu-ray 'explosion'. Those drives will drop in price pretty fast. When that 2 X burner gets to $200 bucks, I for one will be buying one! In fact, if you find one for that, just let me know and I will take the chance to test the diode...

Re: Blue Ray Diode Harvest?

I remember when the first DVD burners were available and they were over $1200. HEck I even remember when CD burners were ~$900, and people talking about being able to make their own CDs. So yeah, they will come down in time. Part of the problem with this kind of technology is that the suppliers of the parts get the parts, for example Digikey has the 105mW diodes for $1100. The problem is that they paid a certain amount for their inventory, let's say they paid 900 for it. Let's then say that blu-ray really takes off now that it is pretty much chosen platform, and in a year you can buy the burners for $129 with a $30 rebate. the diodes will still be $1100 because they were purchased for 900. Company's inventory can't keep up with technology gains. So you pretty much get forced into harvesting them to get a decent price. I for one will probably get one when they are under 200 as well, but I'll have to buy one of your heatsinks Jay!

I'm sure we can work that out...I really want to try this! There are a couple of the 2 X drives on e-bay. The BWU-100A models. I made an offer of $230 to one guy. I already have ordered several MXDL models to see which one I like for 3 x AAA size 3.6 rechargeables. There are a couple with the clicky buttons on the side, which would be nice, as long as there is the room up top for the driver and module. A blue RPL 30mW would cost over $1000 bucks! I might end up with 60 or 70mW for under $300...

Sweet, I hope that works out for you! But you know that pics and/or video will be mandatory!

Oh yeah...If I end up diong this, I'll build the dirver with a 50 or 100 ohm pot so that I can see just when the diode begins to lase and what power readings I get as I turn it up! Big dreams huh?

I have a 33 ohm resistor and 100 ohm pot on my blu-ray pointer, just because I wanted more longevity. So yeah, definitely a good idea on that. Or maybe 2 pots? One to make a variable max current, and one to adjust the actual current.

Re: Blue Ray Diode Harvest?

Seems like a good price for 6 X! Not sure what size diode though...I really like the link TheMonk sent:
http://www.sony.net/Products/SC-HP/pro/laser_diode/blu_ray.html
Because, from checking it over, you can see that the 4 X sony drives show two different sizes for the diodes. But the 2 x drives, only show a 5.6mm diode. I'm hoping for the best here, since we don't know of anyone who has harvested one of these yet...

Be sure to check the fine print: :)

120mW *3: Pulse optical power output : duty 50% or less, pulse width 50ns or less
170mW *4: Pulse optical power output : duty 50% or less, pulse width 10ns or less
250mW *4: Pulse optical power output : duty 50% or less, pulse width 10ns or less

Re: Blue Ray Diode Harvest?

Well, I'm taking the big plunge here. I just bought a BWU-100A drive for $290 bucks shipped. Jack from Optotronics is telling me that he is skeptical about the description of the diodes on the Sony page. He thinks that the descriptions of the mW ratings, is the power they consume, not the output power of the light. But it clearly shows temp/power/current/voltage etc... Any comments here?

I am assuming that the 2 X drive that I bought, (BWU-100A) probably has the 2 X diode listed here:
http://www.sony.net/Products/SC-HP/pro/laser_diode/blu_ray.html

Opinions please...

Re: Blue Ray Diode Harvest?

It clearly states the Optical Power Output in mw's. I don't believe anything much less than the stated output would be able to burn a disk at the advertised recording speed. 2X with a 65mw output seems reasonable. Of course they are probably using a pulsed current. Nevertheless, Sony knows what they are selling and I doubt there are any errors in the stated output. Good luck Jay, you got a good price on that drive...or should I say diode...lol

Re: Blue Ray Diode Harvest?

I appreciate your input here Gazoo. If I bought the wrong drive or something, then I wouldn't want to destroy it. I would just use it in my computer. But, if it has the diode that we hope it does...well, forget the disc burner!
