i need to know which diode is more powerful.
Blu Ray ---mW
or
HD DVD ---mW
meaning which diode will light a fuse/match/cigarette/etc

also how much mW will they have. also can some show me a link to a mW meter, or how to make one.

Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD diodes are 405nm diodes, the power of the diode depends on the make of the diode. The latest "craze" in 405nm diodes have been the PHR-803T diodes which are almost* as powerful as the diodes extracted from $200< 6X Blu-Ray burners. The 803T diodes have been known to easily reach 90mW<, while the 6X diodes can reach 120mW<. The 803T diodes can range in price from $30-$60, depending on whether or not you have one harvested, placed in an Aixiz module, etc. Just read around the forum for a while.

*No one (that I know of) has pushed their working 6X burner diodes hard enough to find out the diodes max output.

Just thought I would add that the 6x diodes are now actually up to the 200mW range. Mine peaks out at about 192mW, and is around 185 average.

Have you found the knee in the graph? Thinking about turning my 6 X up a bit...

What current are you pushing it at?

I was told that someone did indeed find the knee at somewhere over 200mA, but I wasn't given any exact numbers as the person who was telling me didn't have them. Mine is at 170mA right now. I think Hemlock Mike's is at 190mA and its over 200mW. I think he posted a picture and it was either 210mW or 201mW... I cant remember ;D

But mine has been at 170mA for a couple weeks now with daily use. I try not to let it run for more than 60ish seconds, even though the kenom barrel doesn't start to get warm until around two minutes of continuous run time.

Thanks for the quick response! Man, you guys are animals! I already messed up and took a loss on one 6 X. But since you are running at 170mA's, I think I could safely turn it up to say...140mA's! That sounds good. :)

I took a loss on one too... I learned my lesson real quick: When changing resistance values, always test driver BEFORE hooking up the diode, even if the math says you're right. ;D

I kinda nudged mine up slowly over a few weeks. First 120, then 140, then I saw Mikes pen-style running at 155 so I went up to 150. THEN I saw his kryton build at 190 and decided that 170 would be my magic number. Now I'm almost thinking of going a bit higher...

Oh man! I just turned my 6 X up to 191mA's. Meredith glass lens is awesome for blu-ray!
Edit: Using my Coherent PM5200, it is reading 209.mW's.

Others have given you the power ratings but you might not know about the www.geeks.com special on HD-DVD drives that have the (medium) high power PHR-803T sleds that have up to 90mw diodes in them for $17 plus shipping. This thread talks about it.

The jump from there to the $200 6X blu-ray burners is a big one. And NO ONE is selling inexpensive 405nm diodes at all. You MUST harvest them from drives. The last time someone found diodes for sale, they were listing at over $800 each.

I was waiting for something like this.. The more people do this measurement, the more exactly we will know what these diodes are actually capable of! You also have to consider the fact, that not all light can leave the module, because it diverges too fast, and hits the threads on the inner walls.. It takes a lens to bring it all out.


This is great news! I was starting to get worried, when i heard about much lower measurements from others.. But the no optics measurement is very hard to do reliably and with repeatable results anyway...

Can you please describe in a little detail, how you did the no lens measurement?



All this is giving me a lot of hope! A lens with correct coatings should have a transmittance of around 95%! :D

I already had a Meredith glass lens in this build, and just turned up the current! I am sure that the 30% difference is the same though.

These are the expensive 6 X diodes. GooeyGus has his running at 170mA's! :eek:

Yeah, i know it's about 6x.. :)

But the same info is just as usefull - i'm just interested in percentages at 405nm.....


Mike and Wannaburn are running their 6x at 190 and 200mA, putting out >200mW! So i kinda think 170mA is not that bad for a 6x.. Especially, since even the PHR can survive 170mA. I think one of Kenom's PHR diodes died at 225mA, putting out 200mW after a clear acrylic lens! With a good lens, a PHR could actually do 200mW without dying instantly!

I just wonder where the currents are gonna end up. I still remember people telling me i should drive my 16x DVD LD at 150mA, and that 270mA is too much.. ;)

Since these diodes are not that expensive, i can afford some experimenting with them... I still can't believe, that we already have a similar power with 405nm diodes as with 16x reds!
