I was trying to get funds together so we could all buy one together, so you didn't have to take the plunge alone. Maybe we can get the next one if we can find a module for this little turd

^^. Thats a Good Idea. Or we can still raise some Fund Up and Re Fund Dave some of the Money he spent.:D???

Edit:

Aswell as raise up more funds and get another one as you said if this one turns out to be good for more testing.:D

Donations are always accepted ;)

However, this one is already paid for. If y'all are going to get up a fund, focus on a second. Unless this one dies while graphing, I will NOT test it to death. I will build laser with it. If it dies, I will live with it.

If y'all pay for another one, I will test it to death if y'all desire.

Peace,
dave

I'm curious how much it will actually produce... too bad they just had to make it 3.8mm!

Perhaps it would be possible to mout it to a heatsink by just drilling a ~3mm hole, putting the diode in, and press it against the heatsink from the other side with a metal plate that also has a ~3mm hole that allows you to contact the pins.

Obviously this inst the most practical solution, but with a bit of thermal compound and pressure on the plate, i think it would suffice for initial testing.

I would LOVE one of the mounts you are making up. Just let me know how much and where.

With my fat fingers and hand-held calipers I measured between 3.7mm and 3.9mm as I turned it.

Peace,
dave

I have to measure out some drill bits and look for the best fit..
No charge for the module though.. I will make an extra mount
as I need mounts for my SMOC's anyway..

I have to get a couple of items shipped for tonight and will then
get these done.

Ill make it the standard aixiz size of 11.92mm so you wont have any
issue fitting it into a host of your choice

Thank you Dave for taking the plunge here:beer:! Can't wait to see your results. Wow these 5.6mm are small 3.8mm is itty bitty!

Dave;

Thanks for your pioneering efforts.

That is less than optimum, since it is a 3.8mm diode.

Sony had this press release:
∗ For mass production as of September 2010.
To support increasingly higher speed multiples in Blu-ray disc media recording,
Sony has now developed the 400 mW pulsed optical output SLD3237VF and
has started mass production of this devices as the industry's first 400 mW blue-violet
laser diode. This increase in optical output makes possible both 4×-speed recoding on
4-layer media (BDXL-R), which supports large capacities up to 128 GB, and 12×-speed
recording on 2-layer media. Maximum Optical Output of 400 mW Supports BDXLTM
(in Pulse Drive Mode)
To respond to these market demands, in addition to
the existing 5.6 mm diameter package SLD3237VF, we are also releasing the
SLD3237VFR, which is provided in a 3.8 mm diameter package that is optimal for compact
drives. Since the environmental temperature can be especially high in IT applications,
not only does the SLD3237VFR feature a miniature package, but it also achieves
operation at even higher temperatures, in particular supporting 350 mW pulsed optical
output operation at up to 90 °C.
∗ BDXL (tm) is a trademark of the Blu-ray Disc
Association.

Sony rates the smaller package at 50mw less than the 5.6mm.

P.S. Dave, I posted a build using the Red LED from the C projector:

Dave - I believe i have a copper 3.8mm housing. The "dead" diode is still pressed into the lower case, upper still appears to house glass optics ( non adjustable).

I can take a few pics and have it in the mail for you today?

Thanks! Go ahead and send it. the worst that will happen is I will press a SmOC red into it and send it back ;)

Peace,
dave

Dave your the man :D i cant wait to see what the diode in that drive will output, hopefully it was worth the near 200 dollars ;)

We used to spend $360 for a 6X burner before we found the surplus and QC reject sleds :tinfoil:

IIRC PS3 diodes were $50 to get 12mW of violet

Peace,
dave

You know, if this turns out to be a significant new form factor for diodes, we could create suitable aixiz-equivalent housings through eMachineShop that would be lens and form factor compatible with 5.6mm Aixiz modules. I'm sure we could get the cost to about $2 each. Just a thought!
