So my $200 LG 8x diode LED'd tonight.

Sad way to start off my weekend. It hadnt been run for more than a minute without getting an equal cool down time and it was in a kryton barrel so pretty well heatsinked. I think it may have something to do with the beam being directed back into the pointer. I had it sitting (pointing down into the beer) atop a stationary beer bottle that was half full.

Sound likely to burn a pointer out?

reflections into the die have been known to cause degradation so it is posible.

Reflection of a beer bottle!!!!!!! No way!!!

How far were you when you pointed it at the bottle ??

Which driver were you using ??

Was the 8x diode pressed ALL the way into the aixiz module?? I believe they go below the surface not flush with module.

sitting on the top of the bottle pointing down into the bottle. paul is a vet here so im sure he knows about the recessing of the diodes. hes been here almost as long(if not longer) than i have.

Ahh, missed that lol.

Hmm, I'm guessing reflections back into say a PHR are ok. But 8x do like 350 - 500mw.

Even if a 100mw came back, the lense probably focuses it back onto the diode...

Dude, I wasn't handing out advice. Was only asking questions lol
Anyway, didn't know he's an expert...

This thread got me wondering.
Hmm, if reflections kill diodes. Can a reflected laser beam back onto a military multi-kilowatt laser destroy it?? lol
Like in my avatar, say it hits a giant mirror and the laser comes back haha

He said he was using a Kryton, so the diode is pressed right into the head for superior heatsinking. No aixiz module used.

Yeah watch out Tabish, you're not worthy yet. Can't hang with the cool kids at this table. lol

If by "cool" you mean educated, then yes I agree.

You are on a forum with techs, engineers, and scientists. You trying to give advice, clues, or possibilities to a person who has been studying, and practicing this hobby for quite a while makes you look like an idiot. Also the links in your sig make you look like an ass kisser. So if you want to be perceived as an ass kissing moron by the veteran members of this forum, than please continue do what you are doing. If you want respect and help from the veterans stop posting crap and spend your time reading. This way when you offer an opinion you can show you have some clue of what you are talking about.

Are you absorbing this, or do I have to get out the crayons?

Who's posting crap? What links in my sig are you referring to cause I sure don't have any? {A}You're not making any sense {B} If you're so smart then act like it. Sitting and belittling people isn't smart or remotely classy. Any douchebag can do that as you've proven time and time again. Any smart ass post, rude, half-way cockmouthed post on here is usually by, you. We all aren't scientists and engineers and such, I'm a correctional officer but I can put two and two together and build a laser. It's not hard at all. Now, if you veterans, scientists, engineers, whatever don't want (A) new members or enthusiasts or (B) people wanting to get into the hobby or your own private circle here, close it up and don't let any new people join or ask any questions.

Call me crazy but I thought the whole point of a forum was to ask questions and get answers and DISCUSS things in a CIVILIZED manner. You sure can't do that here, no sir. It's too bad new people are almost always directed to this site first cause you get people like you or some other jackass who screwed his life up and isn't happy, who berates and poo-poos every p and q they post. I can understand the whole "use the seach button" drama but c'mon, there are oodles of people on here who could help a new guy out with a simple answer that would take just as long to post as "Use the search button" or " You need to read so-and so and not post until you know it backwards and forwards". It's usually the brightest and smartest guys on here who do it too, that's the bad part. So get out the crayons or whatever, then sit straight down on em buddy. I'm glad I dont need anyone's help here.

Reflection is a possible cause. Usually glass doesn't give enough reflection (like mirrors). The glass may have given you enough if the diode was already operating near the edge.

Beyond that, I believe that this is the first one that has died without a "known" cause. So a couple of quick questions if you don't mind:

Do you have an estimate of the total time on the diode?

Did you observe any consistent "duty cycle"?

Do you remember what the current and output were?

Were there any "issues" during harvesting or installing?

Peace,
dave

**EDIT** LOL @ the "energetic" NooBs
