I think that the beer would absorbe, pass and reflect the light at the same time. Also the chance that the beam would reflect exactly back into the laser is minimal.
Beer isn't just for breakfast and I don't believe it was responsible for the LED event.
I have a lot of LED's asking "WHY".............. "What Happened"?
An amber bottle is not a likely cause either because the fluid, nor the bottom of the bottle is an efficient FS mirror.

well the beam was bouncing off the liquid. i think it is time for a MS paint diagram of what was going on.

I'll have to make sure I don't do that myself. NewEgg has 8x's for 159.99 right now so get one before they run out.

One question for "the more knowledgeable": Could the liquids contents have contributed to the destruction of the diode?

Ahh, that makes more sense now. If it was perfectly still for 20s, then I'm sure it's possible.

Lesson learned: Alcohol and high power lasers don't mix

I doubt it. TheGr8Revealing is fairly knowledgeable.

What kind of beer was it . . . . . .

Why it was light beer of course <snerk>

Peace,
dave

haha. light beer isnt allowed on the premises. The only competing bank of knowledge against that of my laser knowledge would be my knowledge of how to spend money that I dont have on cases of beer from around the country. I bestow upon you... the collection....

edit: and the beer that destroyed my 8x was unfortunetly not a great beer. tight budget = cheap beer = it was Lions Head. i know i know. gross. Mind you I'm still in college. :)

We do. All the time. However, we require a bit of effort on their part as well. You see we write up well thought out responses and leave them here for anyone to search up and find. Sometimes we will answer the same question again. However, after the eleventy thousandth time answering questions that are all answered many places in the forum, we start to require that you find the answer your self.

Until a new member has read enough (at least all of the stickies) That member not only doesn't know what is available in the forum, they aren't even capable of framing their question well enough to get a good response.

Hang out for awhile. Get to know us. Be genuine and honest. You will learn so much your head will explode ;)

Peace,
dave

Oh I've been here for around two- three months and I can understand being frustrated answering things so much. Just people trolling new people, just for the hell of it I guess, just rubs me raw. I've read and learned A LOT from your stuff so if I ever had a question I wouldn't hesitate to ask you and a couple other guys on here. I have no electrical background whatsoever other than some X-Ray tech classes. Far as any laser tech, I learned what I know here. I read for about a week and a half before I joined or even posted, so I wouldn't be that far off base when I did.

I'm sorry I kinda blew up, to everyone. I just can't stand the immature troll BS, it's really not the place for it here. Humor's one thing but not at someone else's expense just to be mean because they themselves probably get picked on or whatever IRL. Anyways, sorry.

I believe in general respect as well. And as long as things can be worked out afterwards, you will have new friends

Speaking for this instance only, there was no immature trolling. I was very blunt, and it bordered on rude, but I basically said the same thing as Dave. Dave was just much more nice about it. :yh:

I still stand by everything I said. I have told Tabish in the past to stop giving out misinformation, and half facts until he reads up on things. I get tired of repeating myself, so that's were the crayon crack came from. Some people dont take hints, so you have to "wake" them up sometimes. Didnt work with Tabish though, he is still talking out his a$$ all over the forum. If I did not know better I'd swear he was Ian, Ieon, Black Candles, Photon Sky, ect. They both act the same way.

Edit: Picked on? Did you see my picture LOL? The last time I was picked on was 4th grade when this kid ran up behind me and kicked me in the back of the legs. I slammed his face into a frozen puddle and broke his nose and left cheek bone LMAO. Believe me, all you assumptions of me are completely wrong Arch.

I've just tried to aim my phr to some beer and I have to say the reflection is clear and powerful enough to kill a diode if it goes in the precise direction if that was a 8x IMO

Test it yourself guys ;)

yep. You're right. the most light is reflected back to the source when i = 0. 100% of the light is only reflected straight back to the source when it is "normal" to the reflecting surface (under theoretical perfect reflection). Where i = i'. In essence the incident and the reflective ray are completely immersed in one another.

edit: not sure if i addressed your question correctly. but the same amount of light is reflected regardless of the angle of incidence (under perfect conditions).

Bummer that your 8X led'd...

It seems that I have read somewhere that another 8X or two died near this current.

It could very well be that Dave got nice hearty diodes, and that 360mA's is pushing them too hard. Igor's test's will help us a lot. Then again, there does seem to be a fair number of builds in that range still alive per FrancoRob's compilation graph...

Was it a FlexDrive build?

Oh man I'm just itching to say something but I don't want ColdShadow to get mad at me again.

Enjoy yourself Mr. Alpha Male

What's your problem dude....

When did I give misinformation??
Look at my first post in this thread. Was only asking some simple questions so that we may find a reason as to why the diode died.....

Imho, you are the one talking out of your a$$...

He seems to have a grudge against you... you weren't that kid from his 4th grade class were you?:crackup::crackup:
