6x blu ray diode testing

First off, I'd like to say hello to everyone. I've been lurking around for a little while and finally got around to joining. As I said in the welcome forum, I am working on getting a project going to build and test lasers; specifically we're starting with blu-ray diodes. We are going to be setting up some low and high power blu-rays and testing certain properties. I will be testing output power and focusability as well as some other tests that are probably a bit hard to do outside of a lab for most people such as coherence length. I will be posting whatever results I find here. If any of you have any specific tests you don't have the means to do let me know and I will see what I can do about getting some data. One test I will probably be doing is to make some 3 color transmission holograms using red, green and blu lasers so I will definately post up anything I get from that. That's not so much a test as it is just for fun, but I can pass it off as science so it'll fly. We just ordered a 6x burner today so as soon as that comes in we will begin destroying it to get at the nougaty center. Hopefully I can post some results soon!

I am interested in your results for the coherence length since I will let us know if you can actually make good holograms.

Another interesting experiment to produce better holograms is to see if you can clean up the beam by using a spatial filter.

Finally, what type of film would you be recommending to use.

Just a thought -- Can a holo be recorded on a 5 or 10 Mp image camera plane with the lens removed? I presume the lens would be a problem but without?

Yes, there has been some excellent experiments using digital cameras.

I cannot post links so, search on: Digital Holography using a Laser Pointer and Consumer Digital Camera. It is 2004 document when 3.1 Megs were high end. It has pictures and movies of holograms.

I am sure that there are more update information but this is (was?) a great source of information, which includes very good background and simple procedures to make digital holograms (the only complicated part is the use of the software)

I got the diode into an AiXiZ housing today and played with it a little bit. Such an awesome color. I cant wait to build one for myself! I don't know what power Im getting out, but it'll sting my hand almost instantly from about 20 ft at somewhere roughly 100mA. We have an ammeter wired in line with the driver, but it only goes up to 75 mA. I should be measuring actual wavelength and power we're getting out of it sometime this week. The power meter we have in the lab only goes up to 20 mW so I am going to have to use a 5% transmission plate calibrated using some lower power laser we have laying around. We also just ordered a couple of diffraction limited collimation tubes so that should help with getting good power! I'll post up whatever I get.

6x -- 100 mA should give you ~85 mW..... Focused, It will do the "tricks" and yes you will feel it if focused. Good work so far.
