I've disected the big sled of a 4x Blu DVD to get rid of the boards and misc stuff.  This picture shows 3 TO-18 devices and the beam splitters, prisims etc.  I believe the BR to be on the left.

You sure got my attention Mike! I'm on the edge of my seat here. Keep the information coming...

Re: 4x Blu

Jay -- That's the one--- I had to go get the box of "junk" to read it.
The thing is a gold mine of tiny optics too. The DL's pop out pretty easy but they are in small heatsinks which also need to be removed. I am going to start with the IR and work up ( confidance building!) This isn't a $25 BR Sled :D

I'm not the only one getting this drive. Others are on the way too.

Re: 4x Blu

Ordered it from overclockers.uk -- or somethig like that.  Shipping was ~10 days.

Mike

Later: I powered up the IR LD for a moment. 36mW @60mA. Typical faint red output. I don't know how the LPM is calibrated for this nM.

Re: 4x Blu

Very nice!

I'm wondering what those cubes acutally are, from the top they like beamsplitters - but perhaps there is more to them, perhaps useful for color combination, since i guess that is what they do now.

Re: 4x Blu

There's only one focusing lens and three diodes. The cubes allow all three beams to be directed to the focusing assembly.

Re: 4x Blu

These are the diode assemblies as removed from the sled.  These carriers come out easily - The 5.6 is pressed into this carrier and all are closed can.
I have not tried removing a carrier yet to release the LD but it should be much like any other harvest.  The IR looks the same.

Mike

I forgot -- The cubes appear to be beam splitters with dicro/AR coloring on them. The red and IR use one shared path and the blue, on the left, has its own beam path with servo focusing. The lens carrage over the disc has two lenses - one for each path.
