Hello everyone,

This is one of my most recent builds , It is NOT one of those Crazy record breaking builds but this one is a special one for me..

i thought i should share with you guys because it was one of those builds which you never actually plan to do, and end up being your most favourite build..

Started off with a Unknown BluRay Sled, which was "very" hard to identify and with some testing and further input from Angelos (lazeerer) it came to a conclusion that is is neither 8x or 12x.. which was a bit dissapointing at first.

Nevertheless, its testing/curves revealed that it is one of the closest to GGW sleds - GGC-h20l, which has never been completely tested because at that time it was about $150-$250 for the whole optical drive unit.

This unit is running on a custom LM1086 driver with 10uF input / output caps, set at 170mA..
I am very satisfied with this build as it seem to handle quite a long duty cycles without getting warm..
Might bump up the current to 190mA just to see where it stands. Lens is the 405-3 element glass lens. I have a little doubt it kinda seems like a multimode as i cant seem to set it to infinity with a single element lens.. the divergence is almost like the 445's with the G-2 lens.

I have no way to measure the optical power atm, but my Ophir sensor is on the way.. Updates will be posted when it arrives

:thanks: for Looking

Nice build. That host looks very shiny, good polishing work :)
I am glad you work out with the BR diode.

Thanks Blord  I am loving the color of the 405nm it is so attractive and much more beautiful than the insanely powerful 445's.. I always thought 405's were a childsplay becasue they dont come in ridiculously powerful outputs..

I think i should place and order for the 9mm and 12x now.. Time to build some more!!

Sweet build I love the hue of those 6x I'm gonna be building some more of those myself. Did you harvest the 16x 650nm out of the sled yet? please tell me your going to build that one also.

It was a Flat-red diode in the plastic package, there were 4 leads.. :(

I have no use of it!!

The GGW sled has a LCC red diode comparable with a LPC-815 diode but apparantly the GGC sled has a red flat diode.

I only used a GGW sled. It was a very nice sled with three diodes in 5.6mm package, 405nm, 660m, and a 780nm.

I love the hue of 405nm lasers...so rich and warm! And hot if it touches you LOL. Definitely build a 12X, they are so much fun!!!

Great build there, I like the unique look of the host! +1 if'n I can

EDIT- what does that label say on the laser? I see "IVIS V2 __________ 1x18650"

I was sure about it NOT being a GGW-Sled because the GGW-H20L's have a Silver Stripe on the Optical Drive Unit..
The GGC was a 6x BR Reader and back then who would have spent $150 on just a BDROM when 6x Writers were about the same price.. So not much of the testing has been done on these, Leaving me on my own..
Throughout the process/building and testing i was very very careful not to mess this diode and was proven fruitful at the end :)

And the fact that this was not a brand new ( replacement ) sled, it was a pull from the 4 year old BR Drive.. The newer GGW sleds donot have diodes like these they have the safe operating current of ~130mA and this ones running at 170mA and apparently still take a bit more..

The Vf of this diode running at a linear driver is 5.1V at 170mA and i suppose the 405's can go upto ~6V as shown in numerous PIV Curves data. So increasing the current till it gets to 5.6V~5.8V maybe even possible so to say!!

P.S:
I agree with you WBS :) .. The beam does produce burning sensation on the touch :)

The host is a MS V2 , It one of the few i made after the V1's.. Other one i have is waiting for a 9mm and a 2.1A X-Drive and is in copper..

says "MSV2 - Polished - 1x18650"

Why do people say GGW up to 130mA I've run then at 170mA to 210mA with no issues ever.

You're correct, they did use to handle 170mA very well and MSC (Max Safe Current) was 210mA.. But its been a while that the newer sled donot have those diodes anymore.. Most of the people have had their diode blown at 170mA hence the reason to keep it 130-140mA..
My sled is not a new sled, instead it was extracted from the Old BR optical drive unit, It has the good diode :)

So 6x's and PHR's are roughly equal now? I guess 6x's are maybe capable 10mW more if you want a good life?

Good point....I guess it is kind of like comparing a top of the line laptop from 2005 with a cheapie laptop from 2012.

Once there is enough time on my hand and my lpm is set up, i'll produce more details of this.. I wouldnt have known unless people had previously discussed on the matter, that, the newer 6x GGW sleds donot have those diodes..
Wb is right newer sleds can be as much as 10-20mA better than handling the current.. But still there is not much difference even if u get the good diode, as of now we can have as much as five times better 12x.
