Default 185mW Blu-Ray

I got the next step built today. I'm pushing this one with 200mA.

It is hosted in what I like to call "The Chicken Leg" MXDL
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3405

Using a Jayrob heat sink
http://www.sonic.net/~jayrob/MXDL/

The PHR-803T diode is pressed into a Merideth adapter in Glass lensed module
http://www.mi-lasers.com/cgi-bin/sho...rchResult.html

It has the drlava flexdrive
http://hacylon.case.edu/ebay/laser_d..._FlexDrive.php

It is powered by three standard AAA batteries

This diode is not as "efficient" as the last one I built (not counting the 300mA one). The last one is still giving me 180mW with the driver set at 190mW. With the flexdrive in this one set at 200mA, the laser is putting out 185mW after the Merideth glass lens. It has already undergone four one minute burns. I'll keep up burning it several times a day until it either dies or a week has passed. I'll keep this thread updated

One step at a time (not counting the 300mA mistake)

Peace,
dave

Thanks for continuing to push the envelope, we may never have known the potential of these diodes were you not willing to break them in the name of science.

based on your experience, what would you say is safe for a aixiz that mounted in a 1"x1"x3" block of aluminum? i have it at 120mA now, but im looking to go to 150. Think it will handle it?

Yes, but I'm not willing to say you can do it with an unlimited duty cycle. You can go for much longer, but unless the temperature is controlled with a TEC, I think it will eventually begin to overheat. If you do this you will be in the realm of experimentation. We know the diode can last in an unlimited duty cycle at 130mA. We do NOT know if it can at 150mA. If you are going to do this experiment, pay close attention to the temperature of the diode / heat sink. Also, understand that if it dies, that is good information for the community as well.

Luckily diodes in big heat sinks are usually easier to get at to change after we kill them, than ones in a miniature pocket laser.

Peace,
dave

well this is my last 803t at the moment.. so i will start with 135 and work up.

im new to this so the question is how do i know if its starting to overheat. Im assuming that in the "good" range the sink will reach a slightly luke warm temp and stay there where as the "bad" range, the sink will gradually start to get warmer and warmer (not able to dissipate all the heat) is that correct?

Unfortunately, by the time the heat sink starts to "feel warm" the diode has already started to overheat. Without a good temperature gauge, just put it at the current you want and milk your frog

Thats pretty neat!

When you turn it on, is it hit instantainiously with 200mA?
The reason I ask, I was thinking a "soft on" circuit, where the current
ramps up, may help it last at higher settings.

One never knows how much their particular diode will handle, untill they
milk their frog

This one had the flexdrive in it (still does, but I don't own it any more)

Yes. *Firing a new one up at high power is always a thrill. *Will it or won't it? *Most can take it, but some just can't.

Although the frog's milk helps.

Peace,

;D ;D ;D

You want to actually see the highest powered 405nm laser in private hands die, do you?

Maybe I should charge admission when I get the new lens

That IS what I am waiting for. *There is no doubt in my mind that this will be dead soon after I fire it up to take a picture or two. *But man-oh-man, in the mean time . . . . . . .

Peace,
dave.

But that's like the most powerful 405nm beam human eyes have ever been laid on. *choir of angels chanting* Never before has a concentration of violet photons so high even existed!EVER!!!

I would pay $200 just to have it shipped to my house to turn it on once, for a split second then to have to ship it back. :

yes I'm kidding , I know they probably have 405nm labbies ;D
