12x Build - Is this right?

Hi everybody, first post!!!!!

I've read around the forums for a couple months now and finally joined. Any way, Im planning on building a 12x blu ray laser but I've got a few questions before I get started.

A. What is a good current for these diodes? It seems like they can safely handle 400-430 ma but im not sure what to set it at.
B. Is this diode a 3.6, 3.8, or 5.6 mm diode?
C. Will this give me > 500mw?
D. Just one final thing, does this build sound good, please notify me if their are any errors. Dorcy Jr. Host, RCR-123 3.7 V battery, Flexdrive set to ??? ma, BDR-205 diode, Olike screw in diode mounting, 405-G1 lense, small custom heatsink holding housing to host-3.5 mm thick just keeps housing snug. Any help is appreciated!!!!!

5.6mm diode. Use an AixiZ module. The o-like module will need a custom sized heatsink. Not sure if it will fit a Dorcy Jr...

You will need my 405-G-1 glass lens. (or Larry's lens)

If it were mine, I would set it at 360mA's, that is probably a good, fairly safe place that should put you at the 500mW neighborhood. (don't forget eye protection)

I have several kits (host/heatsink) available that you may be interested in. Check my signature... :)

Thanks, I've looked through your kits and thats actually what gave me the idea for the dorcy host. I am using your lense and Ive checked every thing and it should all fit (I have a heatsink that will tie the module to the dorcy). Also the currents that were suggested for the 12x murder fund were 392-430, so I might set it to around 390 to be safe. If this is too high, let me know, dont want to fry an expensive diode!!!! It looks like it can handle that but I might wait till the murder is complete to see what the best current is. Thanks for your help (I need it)!!! :thanks:

Just not sure about the module. If it's the one I have worked on before, to fit it inside one of my heatsinks, then it might be difficult to fit into a Dorcy Jr.

Also, using a FlexDrive, you must also consider the forward voltage of the diode. A FlexDrive will handle 6 volts at 300mA's, or maybe 360mA's...

That's why Dave had me build him a custom DDL driver when he pushed his high efficiency 8X to over 1/2 watt. The driver I built him can handle 400mA's, and have plenty of voltage supply using 3 X 10440's. See here:

The diameter of the O-like housing is 18mm, or so the website says, and the dorcy Jr. diameter is about 23 mm so i should be ok. It will hang out the front a little but Im O.K. with that. About the flex drive, would increasing the battery voltage reduce stress on the drive, if so what battery configuration would work. I would prefer to use a flexdrive because i already ordered it ;)

A single Li-Ion will work, but even better would be 3 X AAA primaries. Use Energizer e2 lithium. (these will be over 5 volts) Then the driver will not have to boost as much voltage, and the capacity would be better than a single RCR123.

But an RCR123 would work.

Always consider diode/driver/battery configuration first. Then consider the host...

I can easily move to a 3 AAA configuration, i have a host that might work even better the the dorcy JR, but just to be clear, i could use the current host?

You can use any host, as long as you can fit your module/driver/battery configuration inside...

Yes, i understand that but i was asking if i could use the current host, WITH the rcr123 3.7 v battery powering the flexdrive to 412 ma with the 12x diode - or do i need to change to a 3x AAA host powering the flexdrive to 412 ma? Not to get technical but technically you couldn't use any host, plastic wouldn't provide good heatsinking ;)

I know a FlexDrive will be good for 300mA's, or possibly 360mA's in a 12X build. And yes, an RCR123 would work.

But you will get more capacity using 3 X AAA's. (e2 lithium)

As far as the exact run time, that would just be a matter of testing.

The idea of using a FlexDrive at over 400mA's in a 12X build may or may not work. That would be a question for drlava, but he has recommended 300mA's at 6 volts... (diode forward voltage)

Ya, i talked to him and it looks like I need a new driver, one that can handle the power. Where could i get that, how much??
