Look at the spec sheet for your diode. Not many people have the required equipment to gather such data so it would be quite hard to generate such a table unless something with the ability to measure the wavelength happened to have a dozen of so 405nm lasers.

Default Re: 12x BR DIODES

I did a power test of my 12x 405nm diode that I purchased from DTR (SO6J) and I took readings and made a graph. I used a bench power supply so it should go in the "bench test plots" graph

Heres a pic of the graph.

I started at 50mA
I tested up to 500mA
I used an AIXIZ 3 element 405 glass lens
The test was run today (12/25/11)

Readings taken

mA:mW
50-33
100-80
150-135
200-202
250-283
300-331
350-382
400-442
450-510
500-552

Default Re: 12x BR DIODES

Where do you get the diodes from at this point? Just order the burner from New Egg or similar? Is the S06J pretty much considered to be the highest mW of the bunch?

I think that is what I have since I ordered from DTR.

Looking at newegg, these things run $77 at least, how are vendors selling them for $55?

Yes the bdr-s06j is what you want.... Best 12x we have, and dtr I'm sure buys a couple hundred sleds or bare diodes at a time and gets them pretty cheap...

Default Re: 12x BR DIODES

Ok, just made my first burn through 5mm ABS with my new laser.

I bought an 16x Lite-on BD drive more than a year ago with the idea of building a high-power 405nm laser, but never managed to get around to it. Finally harvested the laser-diode yesterday, and today I disassembled the optics of one of my standard lasers, and placed the diode, with a 5uF cap soldered directly on the legs in it, put it in a vice, and ran it from a LM317-based variable current driver. Took it up to 500mA, and it burned through 5mm thick ABS plastic in a couple of seconds.... Thinking about mounting the whole thing in a box now, with a small fan for cooling.

No idea what optical power output I am getting, but looking at the graphs in this thread, I guess it is >700mW.

Next project is a bright blue laser, and then a yellow one, but I think first I'll get myself a power-meter. The LaserBee looks like a nice power meter. I am also thinking about building a meter for measuring the spectral output from my different lasers.

Do you mean 12X???

I only know of one model with a higher write speed than 12X for BD and it is the new 14X BenQ drive and unfortunately it has the same diode as the S06J 10/12X diodes.

Red face Re: 12x BR DIODES

Sorry, yes, I did mean 12x. Don't know why I wrote 16x, lol. Last night I pushed it to 750mA through the diode, and it worked brilliantly. Not sure if I will push the poor diode past that current. So, now I've made my driver switchable, between 350 and 750mA.

Default Re: 12x BR DIODES

I really like the form in the initial thread that outlines the host, driver, current, user, power output etc. I found it really helpful for a build that I'm planning. I understand that the information in the original chart is rather outdated but... we could perhaps resurrect this maybe keep the form as google docs file so that users could update it themselves?
We could maintain such logs for all type of builds/diodes: red, 445, blu-ray, upcoming greens etc.

Is it practical/ necessary?

P.S.S. Something like this
