Default Re: 12x BR DIODES

Dave,

Sorry, I had posted earlier post #207 that had my build specifications.

I used V5 flexdrive, Jayrob 405 G-1 Lens. Measurements taken from a regulated power supply and a digital DVM amp meter between the output of the driver and + in of the diode. Output power was measured with the Coherent LaserCheck. Voltage was set at 3.7 volts to simulate the battery I would use.

Hope that will clear things up a bit.

Doug

Doug --

Thanks for letting me know that I'm not the only one who noticed this "warm-up" period on the 12x. I think mine is more like 25 seconds watching the current climb.

Relating to the "warm-up" condition..... I have thunk up an idea to use my CVCC power supply as a CC driver.
I will set my supply for 500 mA MAX and then watch what voltage is needed to maintain that current. The PS will track it.

Hi Mike, I have reread several times this thread starting from post #362. If I have understood right, your new 12x is not fitted in a host, but the Aixiz interface is clamped in a small vise, while the diode is not powered thru a battery and driver, but thru a VCBPS (Variable Controlled Bench Power Supply, he he )! Also the shut-off/power-up is different from a standard host power supply. Personally (but I could be wrong) I think that your testing approach is a new one, and opens new uninvestigated topics, like the fact you mentioned:
When I have stable output at 500 mA, I get 724 mW. I turn the current control to zero and walk away. Later, when it is cool, I turn the current control back up but get only 420 mA @ 6 volts. The current starts increasing back to 500 as it warms.

Some questions are running in my head as: do you leave the 6 V voltage while turning the current from 500mA to zero? What happens (or better) what is the P.O. value when you restart the power supply? Does the sentence "turn the current control back up" means that you turn the current knob to its previous graduate scale position? Mmm, it looks to be a totally different testing approach...., so I don't think it can be put in comparison with the other 12x of the datasheet......

FrancoRob;

I have tested many diodes with a similar power supply.

It makes no difference if you set the voltage or current,
as long as both values are read at the same time.

If the temperature of the diode goes up ...
the voltage will drop.

If it dropping a lot, then the diode is heating too quickly.

Ideally, the heatsink will keep the diode at a consistent temperature and voltage.

Constant Current setting is actually better for testing,
since it keeps the voltage more consistent.

Franko ---

In the past, I have carefully increased the current to diodes under test. But Doug & I have noticed a cold start warm -up characteristic which would go un-noticed by those using a CC driver with cells.

I set my bench PS to 500 mA MAX and voltage to 6.3 VDC MAX. When the 12x is powered up cold, I get 500 mA at 6.3 volts like a CC driver. The power comes to recorded amount. Then the Vld starts dropping and as Doug noted, it reaches stability of ~ 5.9 Volts after 45 seconds.

This is only an observation and not important. Only an observation......

Hey Mike, do you think diode forward turn-on time would have anything to do with what you are seeing? For those who don't know this parameter describes the time required for a diode to turn on and clamp at its forward-voltage drop. I know this time is usually measured in nanoseconds and disregarded by most because its so short but just a thought.

I have repeated this start-up test many times and like Doug found there is a start-up slope mostly noted in Vld if you are using a CC driver.
My data on this is mostly irrelevent because I'm not using a recognized large housing or driver.
All I can advise here is --- Nevermind --- Please ignore

As some have observed, The data I provided on my new 12x Blu is questionable because I'm not using a recognized housing or driver.
I've gone the next step and built a mass heat sink for the Aixiz housing which has TEC cooling available.

From the time I started testing this diode, the slope of the curve seems to have skewed + a little. I have hit ~ 1 WHAT?? for short times. I'm being careful but my data with this doesn't fit Franko's graph because of the special housing, cooling etc.

Franko is trying to maintain data obtained under "standard" conditions found with most testing and I'm pushing the limits again ....

HMike

It is interesting that within 30 minutes, info about getting 1 WATT from a 12X is burried in posts about dildo lasers and other stuff here. This forum is no longer about pushing the limits but about appliances.

Cheers to that. There still needs to be more of us pushing the upper limit to get good coverage on the playing field, but at least there are a couple of us near the 800mW+ range.

All I really think about continuously now is: 16x

Don't worry, those of us here excited by cutting edge research can / will weed through all the dildo posts to get to the stuff that really counts

We also need to consider that keeping the masses happy helps to sustain the forum, not to mention the potential new "customers" for our moonlighting DIYers. Forums like "LE" may still be purist-oriented, but they're also pretty much ghost towns... :-/

A plot with my second diode. 12X Pioneer, V5 Flexdrive, 405 G-1 Jayrob glass. Equipment: Bench top digital power supply set at 3.7 volts, unrestricted amperage output set, digital DVM Milliamp meter between flexdrive output and diode in and DVM Volt meter at diode in. Power outputs measured with a Coherent Lasercheck. Diode was mounted in the Aixiz case pressed into a 20 gram finned aluminum heat sink that I machined.

Diode MA Forward Voltage Power Output
200 - 5.17 v - 250 mw
253 - 5.42 v - 340 mw
275 - 5.72 v - 380 mw
305 - 5.77 v - 425 mw
326 - 5.82 v - 460 mw
351 - 5.88 v - 500 mw
380 - 5.92 v - 542 mw
408 - 5.96 v - 585 mw
427 - 5.99 v - 615 mw
460 - 6.03 v - 670 mw
477 - 6.06 v - 690 mw
499 - 6.10 v - 731 mw

This diode seems a little more stable than the previous one already plotted here.
At the 351 ma setting I had a difficult time getting a solid output reading. It wandered by 40 mw before settling down at 500 mw

If you could add this data to your plot please.

Doug
