Hi,

My name is Tom, and I've just discovered this website. I hope to learn a lot, and am happy to have found it.

I'm a machinist, and interested in lasers for related tasks; measurement, alignment, etc. For the last couple of days I have been experimenting with inexpensive dollar store pointers I bought a few years ago when I discovered that the cat liked to chase the little red dot around.

A particular CNC project got me started on this, and I've had an enjoyable weekend taking apart some of these units, fiddling with the lenses and voltages, and incorporating the "guts" into a device I'm building to align machine components. This is a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to actually knowing what I'm doing someday.

Welcome to LPF! There is a lot of information here. Hope you have a good time. Use some quality eyewear and be safe. As a machinist, you will have some excellent builds eventually. :)

Hi Tom,

Welcome to LPF, you'll find quite a few a machinists on here already, from all over. It's a great and very enjoyable hobby. Since you're already fiddling with lasers, only a matter of time before you start your own. To quote from one of my favorite shows... Resistance is Futile:eg:

we have people that have made pretty much what you have asked for,
some times you do have to wait till the right person with the correct answer shows up, but keep trying.
We do have a very good search function so try it out ;)
