Hi
My name is Gareth and I used to do laser shows with a 50mW Helium-Neon Laser and The best home built Laser show on the net.For the help I will get learning from you in the future I would be happy to share it with you!
Im currently working on a RGB system with around 600mW's of Laser.
I have brand new scanners and laser show software and Im here to learn everything I can about RGB systems and a bit of scientific tearm's ect. ;)))
Nice looking forums too....well done!!!

Respect!

Gareth!!!

... and how the search button works! :p

Enjoy your time. We look forward to sharing...

Do you have any pics of your builds so far? I'd like to see a 50mW HeNe display setup. Forgive me but, is it an old build or a retro project?

Thanks for all the replies!
My first laser was a 4mW pen laser that I ordered about 15-17 years ago and it cost an arm and a leg at that time....dont ask me the name of it cuz I cant remember and it was not a key-chain one either and defn. better also.Couple years later I bought myself a 1mW Helium Neon laser (Melles-Griot)and did allot of experimenting with that and tried it with small laser shows in our local sports bar.The people loved it then because lasers were still not so popular in SA.I had many key chain 5mW lasers also(they actually less than 1mW)but fun to mess around with.
Now....the one I had the most fun with up until now was my 50mW He-Ne laser.I got both this one and the Melles-Griot from a mate of mine who had that monopoly in SA.with laser shows. He has every laser under the sun!from massive 15-20WArgons to Kryptons and a 3.5kW Co2.His name is Stan and him and his brother do this(Stan's brother stuck with laser shows)Stan moved off into the cutting industry,Advanced Technologies. As far as I know they had been doing this for more that 20-30years.
Anyway Stan found this 50mW for me and said that a cutomer has left it there some 5-6years ago and never came back nor could he get hold of the person. He gave it to me for 750 Rand(Equiv. to 70pounds)What a score for me!!
Let me describe it to you because I cannot remember the name of it.It was Chinese built by a company who specialised in gas lasers from the 70's and 80's and I cannot find them on the net.I did find them about 10 years ago but they did not have any records left of this laser. This laser came out of a DJ setup type laser show. The laser had a Capacitor supply...about 20Caps with diodes and resistors running in one direction for + and the other side running -.....there were about 40 or so caps all together. The Laser was made from pyrex of coarse and was about 1Meter in length.Im hoping that if I describe the whole setup someone could let me know were it comes from ;) anyway the projector was a set of about 6 solliniods with mirrors and they shot beams straight out the box.The box was around 300mm wide and over 1000mm long. Also part of this projector(not mine) was the round mirror type projecting and one motor with a square lens for beams(similar to the solliniods). This laser could do allot of patterns and was remote controlled or automated and also has some plugs at the back(not sure what for)
So anyway when I got it the mirrors were in a mess.I ripped the whole lot out and got myself 2 hair dryer motors(12V)epoxyied mirrors onto the shafts with springs behind them onto a board attached to the motors(So it was one unit) and configuered X-Y Axis for them. The wires ran from the motors into a Hi-Fi amp were i attached a multi-meter to monitor it under 12V.The Hi-Fi input ran into my PC and I used a music making program(Cuz I a house musician)lol and I split the left from the right channel so I can have independent channel control and I created Sine wave Tones from a the same generator on each channel which gave me unlimited amount of patterns, even circles and near squares(Apart from the fact the tension on each spring was slightly off) and I could make patterns that were sort of "Fixed" in shape but that rotated like a 3D object.
The nice part about it was it had a nice thick fat beam and when people danced and you looked towards it,it made everything inside it look like a Silhouette(So much better than anything in the 50mW Class if you ask me,but perhaps not a 50mW Argon)
Anyway(again) perhaps you have seen these Dj type laser boxes but I have seen another just like it but with far less power than mine....mine more than likely was the top of the range of those units from back in the good old days ;)
Ps.I think the power supply was between 9 and 12000V

Thank you for all the welcomes here,it's great to meet people with the same interests which is few and far between(Elite) ;)

ps.The motor with the square lens was a type of defraction grating lens...it split the laser beams into many and the rotated it.The 6 or so solliniods were just normal mirrors that shot beams out at different times. The ones that made all the shapes were 2 motors with round mirrors....this gave the patters.
This is just the standard setup that came with it....same lot i ripped out ;)

So it's definitely an old build then!

Well, that was probably the longest post I've read in the, "Welcome", section. Nothing wrong with that at all king4quarter! That piece of kit sounds really cool and the 50mW HeNe for $75! That was a stroke of luck there...

I personally can't help you identify the lasers you have but I think you might want to try either in the, "Gas", section or, "Laser Displays", section. You can probably even get away with copying large chunks of your above post, (Only on this occasion though as double posting is frowned upon). Just tell the folks why you posted twice and it should be fine. If you can post photos too it will help loads as answers will just be speculation. Besides, don't think I've seen a 50mW HeNe before!

See how you go...
