Hi, I've just started my account on LPF. I've been using the site for months but with no account. Started with lasers recently and i've been trying out different infrared and red diodes on my homemade ddl driver. I also have a broken 200mw focusable 532nm laser from budget gadgets. Uuuuum, so yeah goodbye and hello from Australia.

Welcome alf638

You'll find a bunch of friendly people on here including a few aussies like myself.

Hang around here long enough, and your wallet will thin out and you will have quite a big collection of lasers!

All I have in the pointer class is a broken 20mw fleabay laser, but for modules, I have those in my signature (down below this post), along with another argon, and a cool multiline argon (multiple output colours) I am buying off Things (another aussie).

My favourite of course is my computer controlled projector. Nothing beats your own laser show in the living room, specially a RGB one.

I've also got a fog machine. They can be had for about $70 from an electronics store or ebay, and greatly enhance the enjoyment of lasers.

Hope you have a fun time around here :)

Fantastic.

You'll have a lot of fun with that laser. It wont pop balloons or light matches but you can do some crazy light experiments with it, and its a great introduction to lasers, plus you get what was the holy grail of lasers a few years ago, an ion laser.

Just be mindful of reflected beams when working with it, without your glasses on. Although wearing them is a good idea, lasers arent much fun if you cant see the beam.

when you first get it, switch it on (interlock plug in, power on, power control to middle power, key switch on) and let it run for an hour to settle the tube. You should do this once a month - its called a maintenence burn, and keeps ArIon lasers happy.

Cheers

Thanks, and I bought the ArIon for exactly that; an introduction to gas lasers. I already have several diode lasers and I cant wait to recieve my first gas laser. The sooner Tuesday comes the better.:yh:

good - now dont go falling inbetween any train cars and the platform like I did on the night before I recieved mine. I went through immense amounts of pain to get it up onto the kitchen bench to demo!

funny - mine arrived at christmas time too :p
