Hey folks, been floating around here as a guest for about a week now, n figured it was time I just jumped in and got to it. Have done a lot of reading, and still really fuzzy on stuff, but as with most forums, the search button is a very helpful feature.

I've been wanting to get into lasers for a few years now, but I seem to have kept making excuses not to, finances being among the highest used. :p Looking at pre-built models offered by "certain companies" is a bit daunting, especially if one doesn't exactly know what they are buying. And that's why I'm here, I'm looking to build the first of hopefully many handhelds/pens, and eventually get into lab-grade devices for other projects I have been thinking about.

My technical background is scattered all over the place, primarily in pc/server builds, custom designs, overclocking, voltmodding, and extreme cooling. I do have some basic soldering skills, but amazing they are not hehe. Started dabbling with the Arduino platform, and may get into a RaspberryPi setup too, but that's on the back burner. I've been on tech forums for, well, ever, so I'm by no means new to spending weeks on end researching a new project that piques my interest.

So, thanks for having me, TIA for the info I've already gathered, and I'm sure we'll talk somewhere down the line.

Welcome to LPF! I beleive you have taken your first step wisely by introducing yourself etc, big ups for using the Search bar also , alot of newbies use the "new thread" bar before the "Lpf search" bar and get some not so helpfull results, theres unlimited info to be learnt here and it sounds like you will be an easy learner too, the stickies are very good to read at the top of each section - they will answer alot of your questions/queries before you even ask them,
Enjoy your Stay!

+1 Rep !

Welcome to the forums! Anyone used to the extreme cooling world would be useful to my plan to take over the laser world. You and I could invent a liquid cooled handheld laser host with an almost limitless runtime ! I have seen the air cooled ones so our next foray should be into the world of liquid cooling!
Enough rambling, enjoy your stay!

Thanks for the welcome! I kind of have an idea where/what I'm gonna start with, I'm just trying not to get TOO distracted by the custom and crazy high powered stuff. ;)

Eeeeh, I think a water loop would be too bulky for a handheld device. Instead, why not have a collar/heatsink milled, that can hold a small amount of LN2, or dry ice that is at least partially thermally isolated from the battery compartment so you don't get droops in power from the cold affecting the batteries output? Google "LN2 pot" for examples.

Stay frosty!
