Hi everybody!

I've just joined this knowledge filled forum. I've been on a natural progression that started with putting LED flashlights together, then using drone FPV cameras and goggles to make digital "night vision", then IR LED illuminators, and now....an IR laser sight.

I have a commercial IR laser sight, a crimson trace railmaster IR. It is rated at 0.7mw power output. I thought it was pretty expensive at $150. It's discontinued and lasermax makes one now for the same price.

Based on my flashlight experience, I think I could put something worthwhile together for considerably less money. I hope to learn from you all and will report any success back to the community here.

Welcome to the LPF, BigDawg. Do you have a particular wavelength in mind for your sight? There are several diodes that could work from possibly 808nm to 980nm. You will have to get a diode pressed into a module and set the focus for infinity....then glue it there so it doesn't move and cause the focus to drift. You will have to get the appropriate driver to drive it at the power you want to get out of it. These are just some of the things I would be thinking about if I were planning this project.

Welcome. If you don't mind me asking what part of Virginia are you from? There is Quite a few Va members but not too many are active these days.

Hey, Zach.(lazerman121) I have a member looking for his first 495nm diode. Do you have any left for sale? I thought Singlemode Laser was going to open a sales thread on his today, but no.

Thanks for welcome.

Paul, I am thinking about all those things! I've read the DIY thread about module construction. I also read a thread on another forum where a member glued the module threads after focusing the laser as well. I really want to stay in the 8-900nm range because this is the optimum non-visible spectrum for my night vision camera.

Laserman, I'm a little over an hour's drive from you in Hampton.

paul, would you mind sending lazerman121 a PM if you need to ask regarding diodes? I don't think the OP wants a new discussion to start on his welcome thread. :poke:

Sorry, Alex. It has been a very hectic day for me and I was only trying to save a tiny bit of time. I deleted the post and I will not do this again if it rubs you the wrong way. :yabbem:

Sorry Paul, I just didn't want the OP to have his thread derailed, but I don't think he minds as he started talking about it! I un-deleted your post and deleted mine :)

I had the same reaction the first time I saw it. Yeah, he means 700 uW. He is using it with a drone at night and an IR camera. Apparently even 700uW is too much for the camera at less than 200 yards.

No big deal, Alex. :yh:

Welcome to the forum BigDawg :D
I noticed most people on this forum like lasers drones and flashlights. I put my drone hobby on hold to be able to get into more lasers since I’ve been a photon enthusiast my whole life.
