I'm new here at this forum and I really don't know much about lasers. I currently don't have any lasers at the moment but I'm working on building my first laser with a PS3 Blu-ray diode and hopefully it works out.
and I hope to meet and make some new friends here.

Hi Zim

The PS3 laser won't work, you need the PHR diode from the X-Box External DVD drive if you want a blu Ray laser

Read the stickies and welcome to LPF :)

I screwed up on my username....

when you say it won't work do you mean it wont burn anything? or it just won't work period?

Welcome to the forum, Zombi! Some lasers of the PS3 don't work at all, hard to enclose in an common module as I heard. Others are 5mW violet, 5mW red and 5mW IR on the same diode! (4 pins) but they are very expensive on dropshipper sites (around $50) so it is not worth the high cost.

You should consider buying yourself some goggles if you're experimenting with 405nm lasers; they are very close to UV range thus can cause dangerous photochemical reactions on the eye.

Looking the diode from the back, you should see:

O_______O
__O___O

(ignore the underlines). The red is the positive and the black is the negative. I don't think these output more than 10mW tho.

yeah that's how it looks from the back, meh its the only diode I have at the moment so I will use it for my first build for practice.

:beer: do some research. It should draw very little current (around 40mA). The other pins are for the photo diode, for a red diode and a IR diode, all in the same can.

Most Blu Ray an blue diodes I have seen have the positive
and negative pins like this :whistle:
