Hi found your forum when goggling about laser diodes and dvd burner lasers.

It's been informative. So I thought I'd join. Still looking for comparisons on open vs closed diodes though.

I was under the impression that closed was better but have found mention to use open.
I already burnt out one open diode by using 2 AA batteries without a current limiter. Will be making one while I wait for another diode.

Well, make sure you use a driver next time, or all your diodes will go the same way :) Welcome to the forum! ;) Generally open cans can be pushed harder, but are much more delicate.

Well, since the thread has already been hijacked once I can do so again with good conscience.  :p

Was going to make an account and introduce myself, but noticed I had already made one on Mars 25th

And now for the introduction part, I guess. From sweden, 18 years old, currently reading technology with focus on computers in what would be "upper secondary school" according to an online translator. I heard about this forum via the product forums on DealExtreme. I started reading, found the thread about making a laser from a DVD diode. We just happened to have DVD burner that wouldn't burn, so I was happy for a little whiel ^^. Until I fried the diode by connecting it directly to a battery :'( After this I read doing so might kill your diode. Anyway I've been lurking here about maybe a week reading and learning. Today I ordered the DX True 30 mW green laser, which will be my first "real" laser (if it gets through customs, that is :S)

Oh, if anyone is wondering about my user name, it's the swedish name of the bug in my avatar. The english name for it is "pine weevil" according to Wikipedia. There is a story behind this nickname involving a pun the way I blow my nose. But that's a story for later ;)

Nice, more swedes is always good ^^

By the way, do you have any experience with swedish customs and lasers? Was looking around on tullverket.se but couldn't find any info :-/ That page is a friggin' jungle...

My laser was caught, I think at Arlanda. It was my nova laser and had to pay big $$$.
DX will label the packages like a "LED flashlight" or something like that and the customs hopefully won't bother, that's all I know.

Ah. I feel sorry for you :-/ But I hope mine gets through ^^'

Anyway, I'm off to bed now. Have a three hour long essay writing tomorrow, so I need to be rested :S
