Hey!

New here so thought I would introduce myself

My name is Shawn, I'm from the UK. I have recently purchased a few lasers and was looking to learn more, in hopes of gaining the experience and knowledge to build my own! Really want a yellow! (594 I think it is?) :)

I have eagle pairs on their way, some spare for friends, good Duracell batteries, nitecore charger. my laser is SF501b (1.3-1.7w 445nm) and 3 cheap 1mw for my cat.

Where would you suggest beginning if someone wishes to build one them self? (I will do my research!)

Welcome Shawn! Hope you get along nicely in this wonderful hobby of ours. If you wanna build your own lasers, just about the best place for diodes is from DTR's Laser Shop, right here. Want some parts or a full kit? Try Budget Beams right here, or Survival Laser right here if you're from anywhere else in the world except from the United States, in which case browse around here. Every single one of those stores is run by a member here at LPF :)
Also, you could contact a machinist here to make you some custom hosts and heatsinks, I can't find that thread that lists all members on here that sell, maybe you will using the white search bar at the bottom of the page. Some examples of such members are Eudaimonium and Sinner. Anymore questions, do ask! Have fun, stay safe, and learn lots!

Awesome! Lots of links in that comment for me to search through! Much appreciated

Think I will start with something easier, I learn best by doing so I'll look into a full kit and mod from there. Definitely want a custom host too.

Thanks again

No problem. Take your time, those full kits, and even the Just Add Diode kits are supremely easy. I did a full kit in much under 5 minutes without instructions. Like honestly, I've held my breath for longer than that :p
And even kits where you have to add your own module, all you gotta do is solder two sets of wires.

Thanks BowtieGuy! the last thing I want to do on here is annoy everyone with noob questions so I appreciate the thread you shared, it's very helpful. (any new members reading this, I suggest you visit that thread too) :)

welcome to the forums, DTR has all the diodes you will need. FlaminPyro has tons of drivers, and survival laser has everything you will need for your first build. :)

Welcome to the forum. Lot of good information here. You may have to change your pants after you see the prices of those yellow lasers though. :)

Hey! Thanks. Yeah they seem to be by far the most expensive, may save that one for when I'm more experienced. No rush.

By the way, I have a 593.5, and man they are beautiful. You've got good taste, it's a lovely colour.
However, watch out as it's pretty unstable and the power noticeably fluctuates, and the duty cycle in small pens like mine is within the range of 15 seconds.

Yeah they look so nice! Are they cheaper to build? Like if you bought a JAD, could you fit a 593.5 in there, hmm

Cheaper than what? 593.5nm is pretty expensive, even for just a few mW. And they aren't possible to build yet without actually building the DPSS part yourself.

Also, welcome to the forum!

Well, you could buy a pre-made module and put it into a host
