hey, im a 15 year old from chicago. i might be young (and therefore, inevitably noobish), but i do understand basic laser stuff from looking around on the forums. like building a driver, using diodes and heatsinks right, etc. im really interested in lasers. i have 5 and 50 mW greenies from DX, but theyre both around 40mW. im currently building a phr-803t and lpc-815 with lengths of pipe (i might be cheap but its working really well- the body helps with the heatsinking). if all goes as well as it has been, im looking at a minimalistic lpc-815 build for around $26. so yeah, thats what im into, building cheap powerful lasers. hi :D

COOL! what laser power meter did you use to find this out??

thanks guys!

i actually did not use an LPM, im just estimating. theyre about the same power, can both burn things but not light matches. based on non-true 50mWs having the possibility of a little under-spec and 5mW trues ALWAYS being overspec, im just throwing out a number. it could be 50mW. 30mW seems a little low to me though. anyway, i just got my diodes from modwerx :san:

You may have been lucky, I have a 67mW LEDshoppe 50mW laser that has trouble poping balloons, so depending on your beam size you may have lasers >50mW!

haha well i guess ledshoppe is pretty unpredictable. i bought a "50mW" laser from them that could not burn ANYTHING. just a little brighter than a normal red pointer. anyway, both my diodes worked perfectly. i wired an lpc-815 up with 3 10-ohm resistors and a 16V 100uF cap i found, using 3 AA batteries. it worked awesomely, and for the price of $30 a few of my friends want some :yh: this laser hobby is working out MUCH better than my high-voltage and/or aquarium hobbies... thanks for all the support!
