Hello from US, looking for help on first laser build

Hey guys, I have always been extremely interested in high power laser pointers, but up until just recently I have decided that I want to build my own now. I am looking for some pointers to help me get the ball rolling for my first project. Specifically, I am confused on how to know what type of driver I should use with what diode. I understand I need a driver that outputs the appropriate current for the diode, however I have seen some drivers that are specifically for certain wavelengths etc. I just need to know what type of driver I need before I buy all the parts.

thanks for the help guys,

Matt

Let me be the first to say welcome to the forums. The most important thing is eye safety. You will need safety glasses that will work for the wavelength(s) you will be using. Even looking at the dot of a high powered laser can cause eye damage.

There is much more to a build than diodes and drivers. ESD precautions are required reading. Laser diodes are the most static sensitive of all electronic devices.

I too have also seen this, I was under the impression that as long as it can control current precisely enough and/or provide enough power they're basically the same and will work with other diodes, only thing I can think that would make them diode specific would be the fact that different diodes have different voltage drops (vf aka forward voltage) when running. Just a guess though....

None of the laser diodes currently made has a voltage drop which is different enough to require a special
type of driver. Any driver will work with any diode as long as it outputs the right current. Just ignore the
"445nm driver" junk and buy the one that outputs the current you want.

Ok awesome! that was my biggest question and concern. Thank you so much for your help! You're a champ.
