I'm new to this forum and new to lasers. I've been wanting to buy and/or build a laser for quite some time. If I had more time on my hands, I'd definitely try building one. But, with my time constraints I think I want to buy one first.

With all this chatter of government bans, I think I want to go ahead and get a 5-6 Watt laser with the NUBM44 diode. I want one that is a good solid build that will last. Even if I rarely use it, I think I just want one before you can't get them anymore. I am a responsible person and have made myself aware of the laws and the dangers of using one of the high powered handheld lasers.

Anyway, I just wanted to say "Hi" and welcome comments from those experienced (or not so experienced) with these lasers.

Hi Skans, welcome. I'm new here myself but already feel a part of the family. This is a fantastic resource of laser knowledge backed by friendly, helpful people. Use the search bar as much as possible but dont hesitate to ask questions you cant find or understand there. Mostly, HAVE FUN!

Thanks for the kind welcomes. Although I have just started to post some, I have done a lot of reading on this forum and have made good use of the "search" button. I am looking for some recommendations on where I can buy a nice kit with a NUBM44, 5-7 watt diode. I've looked on Ebay as well as trying to track down people and companies who sell on this forum.

The ones I've seen on Ebay seem like they would get the advertised power - these are the ones sold by Lasersuperstore. I have searched that name on this forum and I have read what I could find. The price seems fair, but I do wish it had something more than a generic looking host. What can you guys tell me? Should I look at some other kits to compare?

Welcome :D
Don't quote me on this but more than likely you'll always be able to have high powered lasers. Probably the only way they'll be become extinct is if manufactures quit producing them. Or unless customs opens every single package that comes through. "Ain't nobody got time for that"

No, Ovni, I'm not an accountant. Did I say something accountant-like?:)

I have been following small diode lasers for about 5 years now. And, while I agree that it would be quite difficult to ban high-power laser diodes, there is a lot of government pressure to get companies like Ebay, Amazon, etc. to not allow anyone to sell small lasers advertised in the 5 Watt range. The more powerful lasers become, the more likely it is that the US government will limit access to them. I know that idiots pointing them at vehicles/planes doesn't help our cause, but even if this didn't happen, I fear the government would/will take action anyway.

 The name Skans suggests that you may be an accountant and are from Pakistan, but by your last post I get the impression you are in the U.S. You may want to add a location to your profile, this is a very international forum with active members in at least 45 countries, also more people are likely to respond to your posts if they at least know what country you're in.

Oh, I forgot about the Skans accounting school. I am from the American South, not from Pakistan and, no, I've never gone to that school.
