Hey fellas,

Unfortunately, as much as I know most of you hate people coming here because of it, I was drawn here by the Arctic craze. I've decided that I'd like to be a contributing member and eventually take up lasers as a full blown hobby.

I'm attending college for a computer engineering major and working as a computer technician (and unfortunately also a Shoprite cashier) to fund my hobbies and school supplies. I've been building and fixing computers for years, as well as tinkering with aesthetic modding of computer cases and consoles.

On a positive note, I've just canceled my Arctic order. After reviewing lots of safety information as well as reading of the business practices of WL, I've decided the Arctic is not for me. I intend on creating my first DIY soon, though I will most likely opt for something a bit weaker and of a safer wavelength. (I'll be making a different post on that subject later ;))

You can run the casio 445nm diodes much lower if you want blue.
The lasing threshold is ~200mA but you need to be a bit above to stay stable at different temperatures. ~250mA should give somewhere around 50mW after a lens.
Add a ND filter to lower it even more.

Oh and welcome!

I work at the shoprite in Franklin, NJ. Probably their worst maintained store out of all of them.

OK I know where that one is, I was thinking of the one in Clementon (Laurel Hill) though.

Welcome, I'm in West Trenton. It was a good idea to be frugal with power levels until you become more proficient in the hobby. The eyes of the uninformed are easily self compromised. Bill

That's why I'm leaning towards putting a power knob on there, so I can keep it low while I get used to it, or if I'm showing it off, and crank it up when I'm ready.
