My name is Ross.

I am an electrical engineer who works in Hollywood doing color science for film.

Sounds weird but it's true. I worked as a design electrical engineer for 15 years designing analog & digital power supplies & embedded computers for everything from telecommunications mother boards to point of sale devices. Then in the early 2000's my industry took a nose dive (telecommunications industry) and I ended up laid off.

I had friends who worked in Hollywood who told me the industry had become digitized and that I'd be able to find work there of which I leaned new skills such as digitizing film and have been there ever since.

I still love electronics and still dabble in it. In the 90's amongst other things I did design some fiber communications using low power laser diode assemblies but went no further than that with lasers at the time.

I have always found lasers fascinating and have recently focused in on that.

I have already bought a few lasers. I have a Rick Trent (3.2 to) 3.5W 445nm laser kit which I've had fun with last night (just got that in yesterday). I have on order a 100mW 532nm green laser from Lazerer on order which I expect in late next week. And the other is a 1.6W 445nm laser on order from rayfoss.com that should come in the end of this week.

I look forward to learning a lot more from this site and you guys and purchasing some different lasers from the Buy, sell, trade section on this site.

Welcome to LPF! My childhood best friend spend nearly 20 years in the VFX industry out there... he's back in TX now, but I have heard some stories over the years from his time in LA.

Have fun and be safe... this is the spot for all things laser for sure.

Thank you everyone for your welcome!

Hi KapHn8d! Yes it is a fun but tough industry (especially VFX!). I've been in this industry for 10 years and I figure I probably have only a few more before I end up elsewhere but I'll enjoy looking back at my time in it.

Hi Rick! I love the laser you sold me, I will definitely be coming to you down the road for more.

I'd love to put one of your laser modules into a prop host. Might look to see where I might be able to get a sightly larger than full scale Star Trek Next Generation Phaser model body built (or try to make one myself) out of aluminum where your module could be put slightly recessed into the rectangular main body. Then actually add circuits and small lcd displays showing battery power lever, temperature of the diode (as sensed from the heat sink), time display of how long button has been held, and if the mode can be broken out separately (i.e. the 100%, 50%, 5%, & strobe) to have a separate button to switch mode and indicator to show it.

Another possibility would be to also add two small peltier thermoelectric heat pumps to the module heat sink (though that would probably be best done with a rectangular heat sink).

This is of course a long term dream project as my work load at the moment is immense (perhaps for my eventual retirement from Hollywood work) but it is fun to dream!
