Hi,
My name is Loic, and I am a student in Hamburg

Two years ago I made a practical training at the DESY in the ILP
(Institute for Laser Physics).
Desy is a research center in Germany, its much like a smaller version of CERN.

I was building my own Driver there, did some really cool experiments with a Neodym Crystal laser (had to assemble it), Like the Double-slit experiment.

I saw some amazing things, they did there,
20 watt green laser double pumped...
You can have some pics to show you if you want.

I know the physics and the technical stuff behind laser.
After 2 years I want to build myself a laser to play around.

Welcome to LPF.

It sounds like you are well versed in the hobby and knowledge that is lasers. In fact I know that you know quite a lot more than I do in terms of the complex function/design/engineering that goes into high powered lasers and I am sure this will let you build super handhelds with ease.

Some pics of the 20W 532nm would be awesome.

If you need any advice/help on where to start with your build feel free to hit me up.

Now lets wait for Jerry's official welcome :D

Welcome! Yes pics are always good ;)

Sounds like youll fit in well here. So what type of laser do you want to build?

Thanks,
Here, I had great fun with the guys of the laboratory,

They have special Air cushioned tables made independent from the house.
Shutters in front of the few windows, in all Laboratory’s where made 100% dark.
(German law says that you NEED windows at workplaces)
First: with flash of my camera
Pic 1

Second: my Favorite you can see the second pump on the table, also parts of the first pump and the power supply under it (yellow display)
Also you can’t really see it, on the right table there is a machine to vaporize metals onto surfaces (yes they make their own mirrors).
Pic 2

Third: the beam gets parted into 3 beams, one bigger and 2 small ones, both pumps doesn’t have heat sinks, and they get cooled by the house water-cooling system.
Pic 3

Fourth: one of the Doctors put a pen in the laser.
Pic 4

And a little appetizer:
The Neodym Crystal I used to achieve 276mw: yes aim very proud on this because it is the high score for this particular setup.
Pic 5

I can go more in detail with the Neodym lasers if you want.
Crystal lasers aren’t like diodes, they are quite moody and don’t work every time.

Edit: damned Double Ninja'd
i want to make a handheld 1watt 445nm blue laser no i cant use my selfmade driver as it is to big and i dont have it anymore, sadly...
hope my avatar isnt too big...

yes i assmbled it and powered it up to 276mw, wave lenght was abot 638nm.
it realy takes time to make all mirrors perfectly alined to the focus so a real laser dot will apear.
Here is a Pic of the whole system:
Pic

you have to turn the screws until something happens, took 2 days until i had it to 276mw

Edit:
are you the Host of DTR? if so do you have experience in shipping to germany?

What exactly is Neodym? I have never heard of that before and sort of assumed you meant Neodymium.

A 267mW 638nm would certainly be more pleasing to look at once finished that's for sure.

Sorry, I am not affiliated with DTR I just put a link to his shop in my signature.

you can order safely without any problems from DTR. I only encountered problems with customs with complete lasers.

yes it is a Neodymium, in germany it is called Neodym.
but in this Crystal where also something else than Neodymum.
but the crystal was made in the Laboritorys and has a mirror vaporized on it.

Edit: iam too slow at typing,
thanks for the advice now i only need a plan for my laser.

Lol, Jerry was a tad slow that time :p

Care to share some more specs on your 638nm laser? Pump diode specs, crystal composition... stuff like that. I am quite curious about a laser of this wavelength using Nd as a dopant in the crystal. So far I have only heard of Nd lasers emitting in the IR spectrum and sometimes frequency doubled into 532nm but not 638nm so I am rather curious.

Thanks for the Welcome.
Sadly I don’t have much more pictures of it,
Also I can’t give you that much specs,

Pump diode had a wave length of about 445nm, with its 2 mirrors to synchronize it to the crystal -> lenses without mirror->Crystal ->Lens with mirror on it-> filter for red and infrared Light.
Here I have 2 pic of it in action,
Pic

Pic

You can see the bright shining crystal
And the paper I used to focus the dot,
The dot only appears to be orange but it is a clean red after it got through the filter.

These YAG are very sensitive when it comes to anything, they are on these tables to keep away any movement, they have curtains and a separate Air Conditioning for the tables so there is no dust and the tables are at an exact temperature. Nearly every morning I had to adjust my laser or even reassemble it because something moved it just a bit and all got out of sync.
There is a crane on top of the house, if that got moved all experiments have to be readjusted. That’s how sensitive they are.

And hear my Driver designed and build by me:

Very nice.

That laser sounds totally cool with a 445nm pump diode and emitting 638nm from your crystal. That's just awesome to me because those are my two favorite wavelengths.

It would probably take ages to get a laser like that into a more permanent enclosure but I wish I had the tools to do so because I would totally try. That whole rig in a clear sealed acrylic enclosure would be quite the centerpiece of a collection especially if you made it yourself. I would love to do something like that some day.

TBH, the dot color looks almost right to me though. My 638nm has a nearly orange look especially when next to a 660nm which is very red.

ahhh sorry i messed something up, the output isnt as nearly as high as 276mw,
the power supply gives the pump laser 376mw, (i got it down to 357mw or so).
the output of it was somewhere at 14-30mw after the crystall.
still when it is in action this Crystal started to shine bright blue everywhere, then this little reddot. it is a real beauty.
i can contact my mentor if you want more details to the Crystal and stuff.
Here found a poor quality pic where you can see both laser beams, the red and blue one.
