Default Hello All! What an awesome place!

Hello all!!

I have to say, this is an exciting place. I just started to look around and I am so very impressed with how extensive this forum is and how knowledgeable the members are.

A little about myself:
Born and raised in the mid-west United States. I have 2 beautiful children, a boy and girl ages 2 and 6 respectively. I work in the plastics industry as a process engineer. Physics is kind of a hobby of mine (amongst other things, comics, automotive restoration, outdoors/survival, yadda yadda yadda....).

I like to think of myself as pragmatic, progressive, and highly motivated .

I own a few 5mw laser pointers, both 532nm wavelengths. Which really is plenty for what I use it for. My oldest is fascinated with astronomy, so its nice to be able to point at stars and show her the constellations. But after finding out there is a community of laser builders out there, I thought it would be fun to try and build one.

I really feel terrible for the folks who have hurt themselves because they were unaware of how dangerous a high powered laser can be, or just careless . I own a pair of laser safety glasses and ordered more on the way before I undergo my first build. Also just received some sound advice about not relying on safety keys and removal of batteries when not in use, thanks RedCowboy and marcuspeh!

Well, can't wait to get to it and soak up this wealth of knowledge known as LPF! Drop a line and say hi, look forward to meeting you all!

Fantastic, glad to have you with us! It sounds like you are off to a good start, glad to see you taking safety seriously, especially with kids around. I must say I am also a fan of the "batteries out for storage" concept, I remove the batteries from every laser after I am done with it. As you have already seen, all you have to do is ask, and someone will chime in with an answer. This is a wonderful forum, and a wonderful community. Again welcome!

I saw you said yada, yada, yada .
I just caught myself saying that in post yesterday and thought about why I did.
You haven't been watching old Seinfeld shows have you?
I think that's how it got into my head because I usually don't say that, lol. Not that there's anything wrong with it.
Anyways I am a long time hobbyist and LPF reader but only a 2nd month member, none the less welcome and enjoy.

Hello Jaker, you used the word "progressive", did you mean progressive? Or did you mean it politically? I like your avatar, although one day it may no longer be funny. Welcome to LPF.

No, no Seinfeld shows, but plenty of Arrested Development reruns, haha!

@Pi R Squared: Yeah, I do mean progressive as politically, but not exclusively. If I had to rephrase it I would say forward thinking. I believe arrogance is inherent in human nature, that as a species we tend to think of ourselves as standing at the pinnacle of some proverbial mountain top. So I make every effort to stay humble, critical yet open to new ideas, and ever ready to find a new way.

For example, I despise the phrase "best practices." I hear it all the time at work, and it insinuates that this is the best way to do something and it cannot get any better than this. Well, I say bullshit, there is always a better way, and I use the term "good practices" instead. So I guess you can add semantical to that list of prequalifiers as well.

I am disappointed to hear that, however it sounds like there may still be hope for you. Anyway we have all kinds here from 30+ countries so I welcome you anyway. Feel free to post in this thread: http://laserpointerforums.com/f57/co...you-94536.html I am trying to make a list of where our active members are located, am not listing cities, people are invited to post even if your location is already listed.

I very much agree with you on this. +rep for that statement.
