I've been browsing this forum for a while now learning loads on lasers and thought it was finally time to register so i can ask a few questions and get some advice.

I've currently got 3 lasers, a tiny red (probably 1mw) and two greenswhich were rated at 50mw and 240mw. However, they were bought from ebay at a very low price so are most likely the hacked ones i've read about. The 50mw still burns away quite happily and is very bright but the 240mw, which started out extremly bright, has since died which was to be expected.
Given the crystals in it are still fine i was thinking about getting a new 808mw diode and driver board (bin the hacked thing) and rebuilding it. The 200mw sold at StoneTek are looking very tasty ;)

I'm wondering what sort of power i would get from a new 200mw? I read somewhere that the output from a YaG and frequency doubler would be about half what was put in, would this be correct?

Also, whats are the chances of getting an even higher powered diode? I've seen some places online with 1-2 watt 808 diodes but they seem to be trade/industry only.

TIA

I would check out ebay for a replacement diode. With a 200mW 808 pump you'll probably be lucky to get 50mW. I'm guessing the '240mW' laser uses a 9mm diode, with an output power of around 500mW. Now, if it truely is a quality 240mW laser, it will most likely use a 1-2W c-mount laser diode. All of these can be had on ebay for pretty cheap, but you first need to find out what kind of diode your laser uses :)
