I just joined a few days ago. I wish I had joined sooner. I'm really impressed at how active this forum is. I had no idea that there were this many laser geeks out there.
I'm studying chemistry in Montreal, so I have a few friends that work in laser labs, but they don't do it fun. I think I'll have to bring in some of these portable lasers and see what they think of them.
My interest got tickled when I went to Burning Man this summer, and wow. The dusty desert really makes for a great place for lasers to scatter. Next year I'm going to bring some 532 nM goggles, there are way too many green lasers shooting everywhere. As if the fire was dangerous enough, now you need to watch out for artcars driving by blowing fire and shooting lasers at you.

Thanks for having me

Thanks for the welcome. When I told my friends that I was buying a laser. They all asked "why? What are you going to do with it?"
What do you guys do with your lasers? There must be lots of applications that I haven't thought of, or haven't been thought of yet.
Actually, I did mention that I was buying an RPL-300 to a friend, and he mentioned that in the lab adjacent to him, they managed to focus a laser in such a manner that they had a flask of water shining brilliantly front the center of the flask like a light bulb. I don't know if this is something new, probably not. They are going to try some different solvents and see what happens.

Thats what my freinds said they mainly didnt belive that it would pop ballons tho.. if only they new, I got my diy red to shine in a glass of water once it did light up like a lightbulb tho it was pretty cool, Even if you shine a 5mw into at cup of water at the top it glows bright red.

So far, we can light up water, and ruin a kids birthday party from across the room. What kind of fun, safe activities have you been up too? I remember in a physics class a about 8 years ago, the TA pointed a green laser through some sort of beam splitter or what have you, and lit up the whole room with the laser and that piece of glass.

Lol that took me 5 min to figure out lol i kept on thinking candles and i was like, lighting candles ruins a birthday party lol then rememberd about baloons at partys

The only high powered laser i owned is my diy red (now dead from pushing it to hard and mixing up wires on my circuit..)  I like lighting firworks i got one to light from 4 ft away it did have a green fuse that helped alot,  Lighting matches is good to, Or making some sorta rube goldberg machine (its basicly a asortment of random things for one purpose, Like you could light a match with a laser then it catches a string on fire burning it down causing a hammer to fall hitting a ball then it rolls to the end of the table falls of hits a lever causing a needle to come up and pop a baloon)  You can always try to see how far you can pop a baloon,  Just dont put sharpie on your arm and shine a laser at it,  It doesnt feel to great :p

Im sure there are many other uses for lasers to, they are used in so many places nowadays, medicne, astronomy all sorts of stuff.
