Helium would be nice, keeps the die temperature a little lower than Argon. Not much, though.

Helium will leak out pretty fast. That is why I keep picking argon. Cheap and heavy

red and infrared seem to more commonly use a doped GaAs semiconductor; perhaps As is less reactive with O than N is in GaN, as a reason for why there are some offerings for red and IR diodes in non-hermetically sealed packages.

The red laser diode's substrate stack is not hygroscopic.
